I've got a old P-Bass that I acquired a few years ago with a neck plate that dates it to 1964. At some time in the dim and distant past it was stripped of it's original finish and clear lacquered and I was contemplating having it re-finished back to something more original. In pulling the pickguard I found that the pot codes appear to date from 1958 (137800 & 134804). In trying to take the neck off, to check the date on the heel, I'm finding that it won't budge and I'm thinking that it was either glued in place or stuck down by the clear re-finish lacquer. Either way I don't want to force it...

My questions are; is it possible that a '64 P-Bass would have pots from 1958? All the wiring looks to be original except for the bridge ground. And any suggestions for getting the neck off without tearing up the wood...?

Thanks in advance for any help.

OK, with a little gentle persuasion I managed to get the neck off without damage. Phew... And the date stamp on the neck heel confirms it's a '64. The neck pocket also reveals that the original color was, I believe, Sonic Blue.

Now, if I could just make sense of those pots...

I could understand if they were replaced later on but would expect them to be later than '64, not 6 years earlier...

Yes, the color in the neck pocket is Sonic Blue. I owned a 63 Precision for 25 years, Sonic Blue, and it was the same color.
If the pots date to 1958, someone must have switched them out at some point.
The pickguard looks like it could be original too. The SB ones came with a parchment guard.

Thanks for your input, 63p-bass/

Actually, I don't think the pickguard is original; not all the screw holes line up...

From what I understand Fender didn't start using CTS pots until 1963 (having used Stackpoles prior to that) so I guess a pair of 58s would have to be replacements.
