Probably a decent wood to work with as well. It may also be a medium dense wood.

The way the bass felt, I thought it might have been ash, since that has about the same weight and feel to it, from what I remember playing on basses with that body. Maybe it's similar. I don't know a hell of a lot about those woods used. Just bits and pieces of info.

In the types of woods, it comes down to the hardness of the wood, and the porous in the wood. Mahogany is a very light wood, and it is somewhat porous. Ash is a very hard wood. Most of the stronger baseball bats are usually Ash, or Hickory. I'm not sure about Alder's hardness. My two Fenders are Alder.

I see in that article they mention the pores in the wood as I did. Birch is, or was a preferred wood for the shells of drums. Good resonance, and with Alder being related to birch, it in all means, that Alder must have the resonance as well. As they mentioned also, both are hard woods.

There is one thing I remember working with Ash in wood shops in Jr. High, and High School, when ash is cut it chips pretty easy, and it dulls the sharpness of blades, and cutting tools very quickly. Sharpened, and high speed cutters work the best on Ash. I liked working with, Mahogany, but really did some of my better creations with Walnut. I was a shop assistant for five years. in both schools. The shop teacher, or myself would do the more dangerous cuts on some of the machines that weren't allowed to be used by the regular shop students. I must've known what I was doing, I still had all my fingers attached at graduation of High School.

Was that something you were really into doing, like even considered doing something with, or just something you happened to be good at doing? I've seen some woodworkers that pretty much make works of art.

For me, it was a little bit of everything. I liked doing it, because I was able to use, and learn about the cutting tools I was able to work with. Some of the other kids were afraid of the cutters. One reason I guess it was better they didn't use them. I respected their power, and what damage they could inflict to a person. I didn't do anyone's project for them. I just did for them whatever they weren't allowed to cut.

Do you still do any woodworking at all?

No, I don't have the tools, and I'd rather pocket a bit of cash if possible for music stuff. Amp heads in particular. My basses are more than ample for my playing. I just like playing them.

That's true. It does cost money to do any of that.

That always does seem to be a major pain.

Yeah, especially when you don't have a lot of it. :P

Other than the USA GL Jazz, this Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass is more than a back up bass for the USA GL Jazz. It fills the Precision void I have with a Jazz neck.

You've been putting more time in on it?
