That's always a good idea, too. You never know what can happen to your gear on the road, even if you're extra careful with things.

Yep. That's why they're called accidents. OOPPS!
After yesterday, I would do the same with the Am. Pro Jazz for having keeping this one for home playing. Image

You can't go wrong with a Jazz, I think. I still play the Squier Jazz, even though I've been playing short scales, and that's still one bass that's not a problem switching to, since it has a thin neck.

My basic thoughts on a Jazz exactly. The Jazz neck on the Precision PJ makes it very playable for me. I prefer the Jazz sound, but it is nice to have a Precision around.

Yeah, the regular Precision neck is a bit wider, which can take some adjusting to, unless you're already used to that. Even more so if you're used to playing on a smaller neck, like a short scale. You do have more of a stretch there. I don't have small hands, so technically that isn't a problem, it was just I had adapted to playing exclusively with the violin bass, and I didn't like going from one extreme to another with the two different neck sizes. That was the only reason I sold the Precision. At least a Jazz neck has a closer feel to a short scale, sans the extra length of the scale.

Although, here's a weird thing, my Ibanez has a slightly longer width than both the violin bass and the Jazz, but slightly less than the Precision (41mm to 41.3mm, using metric specs, which Ibanez has on their site, and I didn't feel like looking for a conversion to inches,) and that doesn't bother me at all. Maybe because it's a short scale neck, or the thickness/shape of the neck.

41.3mm = 1.625" And that is the standard Fender Precision nut size. Don't forget about the fretboard radius differences on the basses.

Yeah, that also factors in with the feel of the neck.

Definitely so. The one other size of a Precision nut is, 1.75". As on the Roger Waters precision.

Didn't you have one of those at one time?

Yes I did, and it was very wide at the brass nut. Short fingers don't always work well with 1.75" Precision boards. It's a super player with the Seymour Duncan quarter pound pup on board. Another fine MIM bass. The Spl. Edition Deluxe PJ Precision follows along with the MIM improved manufactured basses.

Yeah, that Roger Waters bass looked pretty cool, but dealing with that neck would be a pain in the arse, while I'm used to the violin bass. It would have to be one or the other. I'll bet it would sound amazing, though.

That was the reason I parted with my Roger Waters. I could play it, but the comfort of playing it wasn't there. The sounds were there though.

That's what I like about when they combine the Jazz neck with the Precision body, or at least pick up configuration. You get a bit of the best of both worlds with that, I think. Especially, if you're not really used to that wider neck, but want that sound. I don't think the neck width factors into the tone of that, anyway. I've even noticed that when I solo the Precision pickup of the P and J configuration of my Ibanez, I do get that Precision tone with it, even though it's a short scale. I mean it's not going to be identical lined up next to an actual Precision, but it's pretty damned close. I still like to run them both wide open, though, since I do like the Jazz pickup, as well.

That's somewhat how I play the PJ, with both close to even. Maybe with the Precision pup with just a bit over the Jazz pup.

I used to run the Precision pickup up higher than the Jazz one when I was playing on my girlfriend's Precision Bass Lyte. Speaking of which, she was talking about maybe that one being next in line to getting fixed up. It has a short in it (could just need a cleaning, like the Ibanez CT Series bass did,) and could use a bit of a setup. It has some heavier gauge Rotosound flats on it (before I switched to lighter gauge strings,) which are a bit stiff, and I think changing those out will help with the setup on it. It's actually a nice bass, but just has been through the ringer from being bashed on for many years.
