In the early 80’s I purchased a P-Bass that was on consignment from a music Store In Silverton N.J. It was in poor condition as someone attempted to refinish it and the Rosewood neck had a broken Truss rod. So, I decided I would buy it and Refinish it myself and I replaced the neck with a new maple neck that was purchased from a music store in Redbank, N.J.
I get it back home and remove the neck from the body, to my amazement written in the neck pocket, in pencil is Aug 59. I’m wondering if anyone here knows how to verify its authenticity?
Is this how the product dating was performed in 59? Is there a way to verify this from the body thickness? What is the body thickness of a 59 and where would you measure it at? Thanks

@ stratele52, I am currently away on a work assignment. I can post pics in about 2 weeks. The original neck has been replaced (broken truss rod) so I do not have the S/N from the original head stock, if that's what you are referring to when you say "peg head number". I can check the PU's when I get home. The originals were replaced with DiMarzios, but I still have the originals. The only markings that I remember being in the neck pocket was the markings that I described below. Thanks for commenting.

If you have a real 1959 it have the serial number on the neck plate and not the headstock. You can look the number up yourself at Guitar Dater.Org

There are also pot codes you can check to verify year of manufacture if original, but what you really have is a parts bass and not a true 1959 since the neck is not original. I hope it's a nice one and that you enjoy playing it.

@Linnin,
I realized that when I had to replace the neck. However I love the way this bass plays. I have 4 bases.
1- 4001 Rickenbacker, 73'
1- Charvel 2B, 91'
1- Kramer, not sure which model. I went to the Kramer factory in Neptune, NJ when they were going out of business. Kramer opened the doors to the public for a "fire Sale" one weekend. I grabbed a body, Neck, gold hardware, neck plate, pick-guard and a pair of EMG active pickups. Went home and put it together. Not bad for 100.00 :)
1- P-bass, 59'??
The P bass is my favorite.
