Hi, I am about to start recording my band's first album in my home recording studio (see edwardsoperation.com). I have a Pro Tools HD 2 system with a Digidesign 192 I/O. For bass, I have a Phil Jones P1 pre-amp, connected directly to the 192 I/O (no mixer). I also have a Precision Bass (though I am not a bass player).

My problem is this: The P1 registers a good strong input signal from the bass, but I can't get a good strong signal in Pro Tools, even if I turn EVERYTHING on the P1 up (all the EQ and everything!).

Can anybody think of something that I might be forgetting or doing wrong?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Check the settings of your computer mixer !

I dont know what is your operating system but in my comp with windows xp I go to the small speaker icon on the lower part of the screen and right click on it, should appear a menu , select open volume controls and check the options on that mixer . Hope this helps !

Hey Chris,
Which input are you using on the 192 I/O? Are you using some sort of 1/4" or XLR snake to DB25 connector? The Analog bank on the back has both a +4 dBu and a -10 dBv bank of inputs. I assume your Pre-Amp operates at a +4 dBu Line Level output which is somewhat of a standard for Pro Audio use so make sure to use the +4 bank of inputs on your 192. One other thing to look out for is a Mic/Line level switch on the output of your Pre-Amp. Make sure this switch is set to Line level. If not, a Mic level signal will give about a -30 or -40 dB level. If this is the case then it would result in the Pre-Amp intial input receiving a nice healthly signal then on the output stage dropping down a considerable enough amount that Pro-Tools "sees" a very weak signal. Hope this helps, thanks!
