Hi folks. I ordered a 50s p bass and last night I picked it up. My first impressions are not good. Fit, finish and quality are all great. The tone disappointed me though. I was expecting a nice thick heavy thump but what I got was more blah tone than thump. The strings sound brand new, kinda zingy with alot of ugly overtones. I'd expect them to settle in a bit but I'm a bit worried that either I got a dud (which I doubt but you never know) or the MIM standards that I've tried just appeal more to my ears. I'd appreciate any thoughts from you precision bass lovers. Am I expecting something different than reality? WHERE'S THE THUMP (in the voice of Where's the Beef)?
Thanks

First thing that comes to mind: has that bass been set up properly?

I just picked up an American Original 60's P Bass. I've played nothing but a Fender since 1975 and started on a P bass. I changed to a Jazz in the 80's and just picked this P bass up because it was time to go back to my younger P days.
The one thing I learned about my Fenders was that a good setup with the strings I use [flatwounds] makes a big difference. I have a life long friend who does guitar work professionally, and knows my playing style, set my basses up. It makes a world of difference. By the way, my first bass, a '75 P bass, had a great bottom end but was extremely heavy. I was a high school student playing in Jazz band and didn't care about the weight. This new P bass plays great. I had one other bass that played and felt this good and that was a '62 Jazz reissue I had bought in 1987 with gold hardware. I remember it also had a setup that was done by a guitar tech that worked for major acts.
My opinion....I see this American Original 60's P bass as a quality Fender bass. The company is putting out a great product in regards to fit and finish. The neck plays like glass with the heightened vintage frets along with a good setup. I'm glad I picked this up and it will serve me well in the future.

Well, I'm not going with the flats gents. I'll tell you why. Because these strings that Fender installed are just right. These strings have broken in nicely and I have beef and thunk and thud and all kinds of Precision tone all day long. The pickups are really nice. These are the Vintage pickups. The tone cap darkens the tone real nice and I'm just blown away with this bass. I had a problem with the neck at first because its so much bigger then anything I've ever played but I quickly got used to it and now I prefer playing it over my skinny necked basses. I like the small vintage frets too. The tuners seem to hold very well. I've hardly touched them since I brought it home two weeks ago. The knobs are plastic. At 8.9 Lbs. its a very light bass. At least to me it is. I was up in the air a bit about the color. The honey blonde sometimes looks a bit like coffee with half and half in it. Kinda brown but not really. Other times is just plain beige looking. I like it. Sometimes I love it but sometimes I just don't see it as a striking color.
