I found this P Bass on the Guitar Center website and it looked good enough from the 2 low res photos they provided to go take a closer look. The bass is located at the GC Houston - Westheimer location under lock and key. The moment I saw it in person I thought there was some strangeness going on. Of course, the GC employees either played dumb - or were dumb. They didn't have any info about the bass other than they were passing it off as an original condition '74 Fender Precision Bass for $2300. Yeah buddy - I can read the tag, too.

Admittedly, I'm a guitar player. I don't feel quite as knowledgable on basses, but I do know Fender pretty well. A few things jumped right out at me. Tell me if I'm wrong.

The burst on this thing is all wrong. It must have been refinished by an amateur.

The bridge is a modern replacement.

The finger rest has been moved - twice - from it's stock location and 2 of the holes filled - poorly.

The neck is scary looking with an 1/8" shim between the neck and body. That's certainly not stock.

The original bridge, bridge cover, pickup cover and ohsc are missing.

This is not an original condition '74 P Bass and it's not worth anywhere close to $2300.

Am I wrong? They sure tried to make me feel like an $@! for questioning the validity of their claim and price. They assured me their prices were set by appraisers and their appraiser were never wrong. So, I walked out.

That giant shim alone is reason enough to stay away from that thing.

That shim can be fixed. It's a flat shim -- you could get the same results much less obtrusively with a tapered/angled shim. To tilt the neck rather than raise it up parallel to the body the way it is now.

The saddles look like they're raised really high too, which exacerbates the shimming. Lower them and you wouldn't need as much of a shim.

But yeah, hardly a pristine "all original" instrument.
