Hi everyone, I am a newbie about japanese Precision bass, and I need some to understand when my bass was made.
I bought it used quite recently, and I can read Made in Japan on the headstock, but the serial number on the neck start with "R". The R series shouldn't only be "crafted in Japan"?
Thanks to everyone!

As they say on the support pages,
Quote:
Records on early Japanese-made Fender instruments are not complete and are therefore not completely definitive for dating purposes. As always, serial numbers should only be used as a guide for dating and should be used in combination with known age-related specifications to help identify the production year of an instrument.

There are Fender instruments with an R(+digits) serial number at the neck joint, "Made In Japan" on the headstock, and dating to mid-nineties (= MIJ era), not mid-2000's (= CIJ-era).

Pics of your bass would be nice.
(Usually, the pics would be for a legit check, but I don't think any faker ever tried to make a fake with these very rare & little known markings...)

You could try if the https://www.fender.com/product-registra ... ial-search database recognizes your serial number, or email Fender (Consumer relations, via the support pages).

First of all thank you for your reply.
I contacted Fender, and they told me that the bass is 100% original, but the serial it is not in their database as the bas wasnt bought in USA, infact It was bought in Europe. I asked more info about the year and the model (i guess a PB62), but then they didnt reply me.
The previous owner told me that he bought brand new from a shop in UK aorund 5 years ago.

The Japanese serials give a hint of the manufacturing year with the letter, not with the first (or first two) number(s) like some others.
The R-serial would logically go somewhere in the Q/S/T era (and that's the made in Japan days). Considering all overlappings and such, my best guess would be anywhere from 1993 to 1996.

It's quite common that MIJ's have something more precise stamped/scribbled in the neck end or neck pocket. Pickups, controls, switches may also give hints. So, maybe take the neck and pickguard off at least once - take pics if you don't want to do that regularly.
BTW, that PB-62 (which the bass could very well be) might get enlightened, too.
