Did a quick setup on a brand new one from Mexico yesterday. From the pics I've seen online, I thought the fretboard would be lighter-colored. It's a medium brown. This one has long veins of lighter color running up and down the fretboard. It looks really sharp. (I'm kicking myself for not taking a pic.) The wood itself is really close-grained, to the point where it looks like brown velvet.

This bass has a white body and white pickguard. Nice contrast with the fretboard. From what I could tell, the workmanship was good. Neck was straight, with a tiny bit more bow on the high side. I'm used to seeing that. String alignment was perfect. Nut slots were cut at the correct height. Pickup height(s) were a little high, but I fixed that. I could spot nothing obviously wrong with the instrument.

I had my doubts about pau ferro, but after having seen one up close, I'm really impressed.

The switch to pao ferro was due to the CITES restrictions for rosewood. The regulations concern many major American guitar makers, incl. Fender among others.
