Subdub, I gather this is a bass you used to have years ago and no longer have.

Your hair in the pic looks kinda '80s to me. If so, did you buy the bass brand new back in '72 or did it have previous owners?

I'm under the impression that all '72s had white pickguards. So if you bought it used later there's a possibility it had been refinished.

In thr pic it kinda looks like an odd sunburst, but that might be a reflection. Was it a burst or was it a solid color?

The reddish brown edges look like a metallic sparkly paint, but again that could be a trick of the pic. Was it metallic or a solid color?

My first impression was mocha brown, distorted by the pic.

Looking again, I'm thinking the "burst" is a reflection of your right hand.

Second guess is Candy Apple Red. Translucent red over a silver or gold base (IIRC they used silver base in the '70s). Depending on how heavily they sprayed the translucent red they can be dark and take on a burgandy tinge.

CAR reacts dramatically to light. Daylight, room light, camera flash can make it look much different.

If subdub is just a couple years wrong (1974ish), Walnut #522 could be one option.

But the OP seems to have vanished, and the pic lies (as they always do), so...

After some research, if this is in fact a 1972 model, the only reds available that year were CAR, Competition Red, and Hot Rod Red, the last two coming only on the mustang bass.

Google image search shows '74 P Basses with black and tortoise guards as well as white. (Claimed to be all original.) Guess I was wrong.

(I've always been interested in basses but my passions are Strats and Gibsons and to a lesser degree Teles.)
