Searching for more information on John Deacon's (Queen) bass guitars, I found this picture:

I saw some other pictures where he actually he plays this bass on stage.

I seems to be some kind of prototype of the 1981 Special in the color Sahara Taupe (matching headstock).

The hardware is not "gold" yet.

The bridge is not a high mass bridge, knobs are flat.

More info on the Precision Special of the 80's on my website: http://www.riverband.demon.nl/special.html

I believe that the Sahara Taupe Precision Special was given to John by Fender, which would explain why it appears to be a prototype version. He was also given the red Elite a few years later. Before then, as far as I can establish, John had always bought his own basses, with the exception of his 67 Precision which was bought by his record company in 1974 so that he had an identical looking (excluding headstock decal) spare bass for his 64 Precision which he had used n the first Queen album when his Rickenbacker 4001 didn’t cut it in the studio.

He tended to use the Sahara Taupe Precision live for Under Pressure, which leads me to believe that he used it in the studio to record that song. This is based on the fact that he used to use a Music Man StingRay for Another One Bites The Dust live because he had used it to record the song.

John was not a big bass collector, before 1980 - Rickenbacker 4001, 54 64 67 Precisions, 76 fretless Precision, 76 Music Man StingRay. He used his 67 Precision for the majority of his live and studio work from 1976 onwards. The bass changed from sunburst to natural to black during its life, but was the same bass.
