With the purchase of Fender by CBS in the middle of that range, I almost have to assume the 68P bridge cover would be different, thinner metal, thinner plating, something - but darned if I can find any specs on the subject. Were they changed? Or were they still manufactured to the same specs?

The oldest Precision Bass I've ever personally examined/inspected was a '63 and the bridge cover (and the pickup shield for that matter) looked, felt, and weighed the same as that on my brother's all-original 1966 model. If CBS diddled with the specs -- and I'm not implying that they did -- it must've occurred later on. The only difference between those two basses that I could discern, other than the headstock decal, was the tuners. The '63 had medium-stem, reverse-wind types while my brother's was equipped with the paddle-style.

Thanks Arjay. Do you know which year they went to countersunk holes?

Just a follow up to clarify. I bought a bridge cover that has a mark underneath from an old foam mute and countersunk holes. I am trying to determine the year based on the those two clues. I know 60-61-62 had individual mutes. Neither of the covers on my 60 or 61 have countersunk holes...have not checked the 62.

Can't help with the countersunk holes. My brother's '66 does not have them and that's the P-Bass I'm most familiar with (it was once mine but I gave it to him before I shipped out to southeast Asia in '72). I know that the contemporary replacement covers that Fender offers have the countersunk holes.
