Well, picked up another P bass, a beautiful natural w/maple neck, serial # is Z0, (2000), dates on body and neck all say it is a 2000, called Fender support and they said the neck serial number shows it as a black 2000 Standard Precision Bass. Is their database always correct?
They also thought it looked like natural finish on Alder, which isn't standard, so they suggested maybe it was refinished, but it looks factory to me. I think it is light Ash because of the grain, I think there were light ash body Strats that year that look just like it. Alder or Ash, or ???
I posted some pics of neck and pocket. I think all are Fender American parts, but I'm not sure what the body holes mean. I am sure the neck is authentic, but I can't identify the names on the neck label and the holes in the body, although the string- through looks correct. "Gloria and Julia"??? Anyone see anything like this before? I also see a "P/J Bass stamp, which is strange, I didn't think there was an american P/J bass that year, and all head stock decals look authentic. This neck has a 1.64 wide nut and modern "C" shape, probably 12" radius, and that matches the Fender records.
Hate to take this one back, almost mint and plays and sounds nice, and got a good deal on it (I think) from GC, and looks a lot like the 70's P basses I like. Has anyone seen this color combo from 2000 before? Thanks

I'm not a bass expert, I may be wrong.
Look strange to me there is a Allen nut at the neck end to the body.

I have a 2001 ( not 2000) Fender Frontline and there are a P Bass like yours, all natural ( with black pickguard ) in the American Series. page 86

That is most definitely an ash body. Looks to be three if not four piece. If it's a refinish, it's a good job. Since it's a 2000 there is no collector value.

I never knew their records to get a color wrong. It is a quality refinish and looks very nice. Enjoy! The lined and numbered stamping label looks correct. People come and go and move around so stampings on about every neck will be different.

Thanks all, yes, the finish on the body is beautiful, and I also think it is ash as I have seen other ash basses and strats from that time period that look similar. So I will assume someone replaced the neck with a maple neck from the same time period, so at least I can call it a 2001 and be accurate (Fender records show date of manufacture as Jan 2001). Actually, of the last two "vintage" basses I purchased to "test", one had a warped neck w/maxed out truss nut (that will eventually have to get replaced), and the other had a neck that was 2 years newer than the body (with badly worn frets), and it didn't seem to hurt the prices of the those 2 much.
The color combo is exactly what I was looking for, and it sounds great. This will make a good "player"!!!

Yes! I don't know when they started but my 2012 Jazz has it. Comes with a T-handle adjustment tool that fits right in without popping the neck off.
