Man, that is an open-ended question, just make sure you keep an open mind.

Immerse yourself in as many genres of music that inspire you to play the bass.

Eventually you will need to understand harmony & rhythm to effectively play the bass. A grasp of music theory can’t hurt you, applying it to playing the bass can only help.

For some very basic starters . . .

Since you mention Blink 182, I hear that their basslines are pretty easy to learn. Some others to look into are RHCP/Flea, The Who/John Entwistle, Led Zeppelin/John Paul Jones, and Black Sabbath/Geezer Butler. JMO

I agree with Zod. If you listen to heavier stuff, Metallica/Newstead&Burton years, Maiden/Steve Harris are pretty good with bass lines. The Saint Anger stuff you can barely hear the bass, since it was Bob Rock (I think, or whatever the producer's name was) playing the bass lines.

I might also suggest jazz bassists like Christian McBride and Ron Carter. They're terrific musicians in their own right but they've mastered the art of flawless bass in a setting where a singer and/or other instrumentalists are the featured performers.

I agree with a lot of pros who've said (e.g., in Bass Player) over the years that the bass player can make the band or be a non-factor. Hence my suggestion to look for players who without "standing out" as might be the case in a rock band, are role players but who clearly contribute to every track or tune.
