Hey All - I have a new American Professional Precision being delivered on Thursday. Adding to my Fender collection - I mostly play a Marcus Miller Jazz (MIJ). Did LOTS of mods to the Jazz, including shielding. Does anyone know how thorough the shielding is out of the factory on these new Pro series? Will I need to do much work to it? How is set-up? Intonation, etc. Trying to avoid $250 or more with my luthier before I can perform with this new Precision. Thoughts? Thanks.

This new instrument should be totally noise free. American Precision Basses are noted for that. Setup is going to vary depending on shipping, temperature extremes and how close to perfect the factory setup was. Almost always need a setup on a new instrument. I buy new from a local dealer and make sure they include a setup.

The CS pickups on my 2014 Am.Std Precision are very quiet, so I would guess that the Pro's V Mod pickups would be just as quiet. Enjoy your new bass 8) .

All American made Fenders have thick black special shielding paint coating all pickup and control body cavities, so no problems there. They will be setup to standard Fender factory specs, which you can look up the pdf file here on Fender.com All you'll have to do is tune and play. Enjoy!

The split coils of a Precision Bass pickup are connected out-of-phase with one another which essentially makes it a humbucking pickup. Thus, shielding is contra-indicated.

It is interesting that the pickup designer, Michael Bump, designed both the Custom Shop and the new V Mod p'ups. And he can be found on talkbass from time to time.

Humbucking pickups and shielding each address different potential problems. They are not redundant. Humbucking pickups do not eliminate the need for shielding.

Humbucking pickups cancel out the effects of magnetic fields. Shielding blocks electric (including electro-magnetic) fields.

If that be the case then why didn't Leo specify shielding for the Precision Bass just as he did with his subsequent Jazz Bass model?

58 precision pickup, same design as the 57. That flat piece of metal under the pickups wired to ground is a brass shielding plate.

If the anodized aluminum pickguard was not used for shielding then why when replaced with celluloid pickguard was this aluminum shielding plate used under the celluloid pickguard?

Got it, Dave. Thanks for the clarification.
