This bass is not an original 81. But it could be an 82 with chrome covers added. I really do not think it is an 81. A 79 through 81 S9 serial (a serial seen in all three years) should have a thumbrest. Thumbrests went away with the 82 model and by and large the chrome covers did also and you also see 82 models with S9 serials. 82's have white pickup covers and no chrome pickup/bridge covers, 81's have black pickup covers and chrome covers. Many people removed the thumbrest and replaced them with pickguard screws since the thumbrest screws were integral to securing the guard to the body which you see more often than no thumbrest holes at all. Sorry my post is so late but this is not an 81, 82 maybe with chrome covers added but the pot dates are crucial in dating these S9 basses. One caveat is that if this was an EXPORT model they could have had slightly different specs, but the white plastic pickup covers appear in 82. If you are buying this as an investment I'd get a second opinion with a photo appraisal from George Gruhn. I personally would not see it as an investment grade instrument and would not expect it to significantly appreciate in value since it obviously is modified in one regard or another which makes it player class not collector class. That is not a bad thing. I'd rather have a good playing player than one I'm afraid to play. White pickup covers were always exposed with no chrome pickup cover stock so that fact alone is very suspect.
