Yeah, it's a little tight down here in the basement. My Fender 215 PRO is
actually at my band's practice location right now. I use an Electro-Voice B115-M
for practice and take the Bassman head back and forth from home to practice.
Sometimes I hook up the Ampeg SVT-3 PRO for the extra power. I wish
Fender would make a totally solid state Bassman 500 or even a Bassman 1000
using class D technology. The Bassman tone is so sweet but I need more
power and I'm kind of down on tubes right now because they're always
crapping out.

Hi Ode1990.

What style(s) of music do you play? Your choice of upgrade will drastically depend on this factor.

Anyways I currently play my P bass through a Mesa Boogie Carbine M9 head, and (1) 4x10 Neo GK cab with (1) 2x12 Neo GK cab. I play music from many different genres, from County to Heavy Metal. The Carbine M9, IMO, has a basic setup in design. It has tubes for preamp and the rest is Solid State. I'm still pretty new to Mesa Boogie so my experience with them is limited, but as for sound and tone, it is a really sweet bass head.

If you love the GK sound, stay with that and upgrade to their 1001 series head. Those sound awesome. For a more classic sound, try their RB 800. It doesn't quite have the power rating as the 1001 or 2001, but that depends if you need it or not. (Can you tell I use to be a GK fan? In fact, I still love GK for the most part, but my new Mesa Boogie is freekin' awesome too! Just as good but in it's own different way.

Another question you want to ask yourself with upgrades, is Tubes or Solid Sate or Hybrid?

Anyways, thanks for your post. Hope this helps.

Rigs. I've had a few. But then too few to mention.

They passed the tone, they made it clear without exemption.

And when I've said all that, may I say
Not in a shy way

My friend I did all that....
And I did it MY WAY.

Sorry Frankie, but borrowed your spirit for a moment to say, the instrument is NOT that important at all. The rig is EVEN LESS important. What is important is that you play and that you play WHAT YOU FEEL. A good player overcomes any inherent deficiencies to deliver a good performance.

Look back to the 50's and 60's and 70's when the gear was LESS than optimal. YET people still dance to it. They still buy it. They still love it.

It is the PLAYER, not the bass, nor the amp that makes butts wiggle.

Learn to make the butts wiggle more, and you'll worry about what rig or instrument you are using much less.

Good day.

I play my 1998 MIM Fender Precision Bass through two Fender Bassman 410 cabs which is all powered by the Fender TB-1200 head. This setup is a definite wall and ground shaker.

'89 Squier II P-bass through some vintage gear -an early 70's Sunn Coliseum Lead amp (a la Entwistle) and 70's Peavey 412M cabinet (4x12). It's loud!

Of course, brotherdave is correct, but I now have the best tone I've ever achieved with an American Vintage '57 P through a Mesa/Boogie Walkabout Scout 1x15. Having said that, I rehearse through a Fender Bassman 400 2x10 and perform at small venues with a Genz-Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T.

The gear puts my bass lines in the right place in the frequency spectrum, but my fingers put them in the right place in the song.

I have a 1953 Orignal P Bass & I have a 1966 P Bass in Olympic White. The 53' is an 8 out of 10 condition the '66 Olympic White would be a 10 if it weren't for some light checking. Gonna buy a $@! or Mexi P Bass that I can take out & bump or ding without worry. I have a Fender bassman 60 which doesn't cut it. I get together with a few guy & jam nothing serious but if they crank their Marshall you can't hear me anymore. Any suggestions on a beefy rig thats portable?
