The Fender Precision Bass & the Fender Jazz Bass, they both are icons for reason, they both are proven tone making tools.

Playability aside (obvious differences in th e neck width - has some tonal implications) . . .

The P-Bass has a more pronounced thick midrange tone than a Jazz Bass.

Although the Jazz Bass with its two traditionally single coil pickups has more versatility in tone, it will not nail down the sound of a P-bass. The type of pickup and the location can’t be duplicated. Of course you can use just the neck pickup of a Jazz Bass, again it is close but it is not going to get the exact sound for reasons that have been already mentioned.

Strings selection, equalization, amplifier selection, etc., can only do so much, it still takes a P-Bass to sound like a P-Bass.

The bottom line, your taste, gigs, recordings, style, genre, musical requirements, etc., will dictate which is better for you.

I've been playing a USA Deluxe PBass for the last 10 years or so and I just managed to get my hands on one of the discontinued five string versions. I have to say this is one of the most versatile guitars you will ever play. The preamp is powerful, yet quiet and the P-pickup thumps like it should, but the real goodness is the amount of variation you can get out of the two pickups together. I can coax some pretty nice Jazz tones when I want them, but it's all about the 'P'!
Here's The Four. Image

I prefer the P bass body, rather than the offset jazz body. I also lilke that the P bass is beefier sounding than jazzes, which i have found quite weedy. I went from Jazzes to Ps.
