Thanks, I've been looking at parts prices, too. I guess that would explain why almost every older P bass I've looked at is altered somehow. Many/most have replacement pickups, and many have different bridges and machines. I actually have a custom P bass now with a lightweight body from who knows where and an '84 Mexican P neck, painted fiesta red w/'62 RI pickups that plays nice, but I keep reading and hearing from people that American basses are the best, so I wanted to get one to see for myself. I know I really like the look of the ash w/clearcoat body and the look and feel of the old "B" series 1.6" nut glossy maple/maple neck, don't know how long either was in production .

Brotherdave can probably give you a definitive account but I believe the natural ash finish first showed up on the Precision Bass during the early '70s. As for specific neck profiles and fretboard widths, I haven't got a clue.

Looking at the custom color charts, in 70 Ash which appears "natural" available on Telecaster Thinline only. I do not have a 71 chart. 72 and 73 Natural appears to be ash and is a general custom color.

Well, I had another Fender P bass shipped to me from that popular guitar store chain and this one was described as "great condition", an original '82 in beautiful sierra burst that "looks like it hadn't been played much", only $1199 + 100 for tax and shipping, a mere 1300 bucks. . Well, the finish was crinkled from sitting in a wet case, there was 2-3mm dip in the neck at the 3rd fret under the E string, and the truss rod was turned so tight that one "ear" of the adj. nut fell off when I loosened it and the last 3 frets were raised in the center from the adj being turned so far into the hole. This one went to the luthier and after and a new adj nut and best try at a set-up, the verdict was the neck was shot. So back it went, too. The prices on these old beaters are getting ridiculous (to me) and I'm almost ready to start buying the parts to build one, as Arjay suggested, unless, I can find a G&L LB-100 or SB-1before I give up and build one.

Good Gracious! Just buy a brand new American Professional Precision. Far better than any CBS Fender.

Now there was some good advice. American Professional a good option too. American Vintage also super sweet. The American Standard selection around here SLIM at the moment due to a recent sales promotion. Heck even the 50's Precision Roadworn MIM is probably better than late CBS. With a current USA model you will get a more stable neck and tighter tolerances than post 1969 CBS in general plus have the best warranty in the business. Play several, then buy one you like as it sits and stop bottom feeding on bargain vintage. Building a vintage reproduction will wind up being more expensive that a new American Standard and have far less resale value.

Ya know, if they offered a '72 American reissue in natural glossy ash/w maple and an "A" or Jazz neck, I'd be all over it!!!!!!!!!! I think there was a MIJ like that awhile back. Thats what i want right now. Thats why im looking at the old clunkers.

Good gracious is right though, anyone know of any more recent offerings that would give me those specs or pretty close to it? I did actually like the 1.58" (not 1 5/8) nut neck on that one beater i had. Thanks
