Really wanted a '72 or 3 blonde ash P Bass, so I just bought this bass as a "players" bass, told it was a '73 (neck plate 369XXX). I see now the "Baddass" bridge is about 1/8" into the body, and none of the electronics are original, but my question is regarding the age. I decoded the neck and it looks to be a '75 (0103 1953 on end in black), but I can't tell what the markings mean in the neck cavity. There's a 2 or Z in green pencil, the name R.Amena? with a small circle above the name with 4 symbols I can't make out stamped in black ink, and the wiring rout is square on one end and not connected to the pickup rout. Thumb rest holes in both locations under the wrong pick guard. Anyone have any idea what vintage this body might be? I would upload pics but couldn't figure out how?

What you have is a very obvious parts bass. At best the body; neck, and neck plate are authentic Fender. Can't really be too sure about the neck without front & back photos of the headstock. What does your serial number return when you run it through guitardaterproject.org?
I hope you didn't get burned too bad.

Thanks for the info, I agree 100%. So I returned it tonight. The neck was maybe early '75, body was maybe late '72, neck plate serial # was late '72, nothing else was original or even from Fender. $1300 bucks seemed high after I found out all that, and the bridge was routed into the body about 1/8" deep and not straight. So, I guess I will keep looking for another one. Thanks everyone for the replies.

Unless you are looking for a 'Birthday Bass', I would not be a buyer of any CBS era instrument. The quality of instruments coming out of Corona, CA nowadays is leaps and bounds better then any Fender I played in the 1970's. I am looking at the new American Professional Precisions with a lusty eye.

I know you are probably right, and the good thing about Fender American made basses is that they don't go down in value. I would really like to see a natural swamp ash P bass '72 reissue with the A or B neck and updated electronics, I think I would be happy with that. I was playing Hagstroms and Gibsons in the 60's and early 70's, then quit playing for many years. Now I am playing out again and have 4 Fenders, but never owned an American product. Ya know I like stuff from the 60's/70's and I like anything vintage, but I'm sure the new stuff is probably the way to go!!

CBS bought Fender in 1965. IMO almost all ( if not all ) instruments or amps are original " Fender" not CBS until beginning of '70. I would not say "no" to them.

Your disillusionment aside, I'm going to set the record straight with FACTS.

The lion's share of Fender's blackface amps and all of the original silverface amps were built during the CBS era. And most of those are considered to be the finest examples of musical-instrument amplification ever. EVER.

While it's true that CBS did its nefarious best to cheapen the products that Leo developed, most of that diddling did not manifest until near the end of the 1960's. And the fact of the matter is, during the early years of the CBS tenure, they actually developed some innovations that are still popular today such as the "tuxedo" fretboards added to the Jazzmaster, Jaguar, and Jazz Bass, relocating the "tug bar" to a more ergonometric location on all basses, and the drip-edge trim used on the first silverface amps. Quality did take a significant nosedive during the 1970's but the previous decade's products were still very fine guitars, basses, and amps.

Because somebody has to keep the uninformed straight.

Fear not......I'll be around to deliver a stirring eulogy at *your* memorial.

While we are all still alive here, I have another question. I own 2 Fender MX P basses and 1 Japan P Deluxe, but have never owned an American Fender. I did play that beater '73/75 parts bass for about 4 hours before I gave it back to GC and actually did like the neck, it seemed a little thinner across the top, especially at the 1st fret, but also a little thicker/rounder and not as flat as my MX bass necks. But I've decided now that I don't really want to pay all that money for a refinished, rebuilt, and/or repaired phoney "vintage" parts bass like many of the basses I see on the "online" used instrument sites. I want a maple neck w/maple fret board and would like a natural or transparent white body (not on the ugly Alder body), and I like the glossy fretboards What years would be good to keep an eye out for to get that finish and neck style, if it's even possible to answer a question like that? I'm not going to pay $1500 and up for some worn out '70's beat-up parts bass from the crappyist time period of Fender's production. I would like to find a nice one to play for awhile before they put me in the urn (which probably won't be that far in the future)!!

Basically you're looking for an all-out custom-built P-Bass and your choices are two......build it yourself or have someone do it for you. If you choose the first option you'll save money, time, and have the benefit of hand-selecting each and every part that make up the instrument. Door number two will be pricey, time-consuming, and (possibly) take several tries until you're totally satisfied. Fender's Custom Shop builds some very fine instruments but rest assured it'll require from you the patience of Job -- expect a six to nine month wait time before you get your dickbeaters on your dream bass. A non-affiliated custom luthier might require at least half that time, albeit at less cost.

Should you decide to try your hand at assembling a bass there are many forum members (myself included) who can help. OTOH, should you opt to let someone else do the heavy lifting there are lots of folks here who can share their experiences so you know what to expect when commissioning a custom-built instrument.
