How is it going? I have a question, I want to start a project on a squire precision bass that i got my hands on a few years back, im not afraid to work on it because its not the best of the best in the first place. I want to sand the neck, mostly for the back of it. If there is anyone who has suggestions like what not to do or how to sand the neck or knows of any types of cool upgrades (moving the pickups/ new pickups etc). Thanks alot, Jim

Sure, Im currently upgrading a 1992 Squier P-bass, and to start out, you will definatley want to change the pickups. I would reccomend EMG's for the highest quality, but also if you are trying to stay on budget like I was when my original Fender P-bass pickups died, I got the Basslines SPB-3 quarter pound pickups which are amazing as well. Next, you will definatley want to change the bridge, which I would place that as the next priority, You will either want the Leo Quan Badass 2 or 3 bass bridge. These things keep in tune a heck of alot longer than standard squier bridges. then for the neck, Im trying the same thing so my ears are open as well, Ive been curious about this matter as well.

I agree with this wholeheartedly!!! Bassline 3/4 pounders are good p/ups to keep you on budget. I just upgraded to the EMG's which are active p/ups and the BadAss III for my bass. Before you work and put the time on the neck tho, make sure it's good to go, not warped and/or damaged. Alot can be done now adays to fix busted neck, but it's pricey too. Tuners on the Squiers can be bad, I've never had experienced this personally, but I know some that have. Good luck to the op on upgrading you bass :!:

Thanks Odie1990 and Power Jazz Bass for the tips, I did sand down the neck, just to get the finish off, and it works so much better for me. I used a sandpaper with it, not machinery like a sander, because that could possibly damage the neck. I still wouldnt rely on my sucess alone, if anyone happens to have a nice bass neck and finish, i would still ask around before modifying, dont forget i had a lousy finish. and yes to power jazz bass the neck was in good condition, thanks for the heads up.if i could get either of your advice on what type of badass bridge to look for i know theres a few, ie the badass II, III, and i believe IV? and ill probably still look for pickups, i would greaty any info on quality or difference between pickups. Thanks again.

If you sanded the neck than be sure to ad a sealing finish to it. I would
put on a couple coats of satin poly urethane. Stay away from high gloss
urethane since it could end up being sticky. Don't use an oil finish like tung
oil or linseed oil sinces they don't protect against moisture. Maple has to be finished or the neck will twist and warp really fast. Good luck with your
project.

Jimmystrat, I would say BadAss II's would be good, Hwy 1 series have them on standard. As a matter of fact, that's what I'm thinking of putting on my VM Squier. My '88 has the BadAss III, which I could have just gotten the IIs intead, but I like the look of the III. If you have string through body, get the III. G/L making the decision my friend.
