Heads up for something coming tonight at 10 PM. "DUEL" starring Dennis Weaver is the film on ME-TV Network's Svengoolie show at 10 PM EDT. This rarely seen movie had legs because it is engrossing. It started out as an "ABC Movie of the Week" directed by Steven Spielberg. "DUEL" is widely regarded as one of the best films in the broadcast network movie of the week genre. After an enthusiastic reception on American TV the film was re-edited and additional scenes filmed to extend the original 74 minutes to 90 minutes for Euro/Australian theatrical release becoming Steven Spielberg's first theatrical release. This extended version was later seen in USA theaters in limited release. The soundtrack is somewhat bare-bones but prominently features top LA studio bassist Carol Kaye and other members of "The Wrecking Crew." Ms. Kaye's bass was used to augment and intensify sounds of the semi truck which is the antagonist in the film. She spent way more time working on the project than other musicians making "DUEL" one of her more lucrative projects. Not long after the theatrical release she married and left the L.A. studio scene to accompany her new husband who was a jazz musician with a steady gig at a Mexican resort. The two were involved in a serious car crash in Mexico killing her husband and severely injuring Kaye. It took her a long time to come back after the accident and her studio career was far more limited post crash recovery as arthritis set in, so she became the first Bass instructor at the Henry Mancini School of Music at UCLA. Today she still works as a private instructor in LA. This is a seriously decent movie.

They've also played that movie on the El Rey network. That's pretty cool about Carol Kaye. I know she's played on so much stuff.
