Hi folks, I'm new to the forum but an avid precision user.
I'm considering bidding on the bass in the attached url- http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... 1193950598
But...I have a sneaking suspicion its a fake. Photos are a bit limited but, based on the limited info, can any of guys identify whether you think it the real deal or not?
Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers :D

Not even close to legitimate. Just about everything on that bass screams anything but Fender.

I'm not an expert but to me is not a Fender bass;

1- Where are the truss rod bolt ? Don't see it at any end of neck
2- Peg head are made in two pieces of wood; never see that on any Fender

I'll won't buy it

The pickguard looks wonky as well.

You guys are brilliant. Pretty much confirmed both the main issues I had with it. Whats the saying? If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Thanks for your input too

In general any instrument without a serial number is to be avoided like the plague. At best it is a parts bass and at worst an outright fraud. There is no serial present here, so it is not legit. The serial and "JAPAN" were both probably on the original neckplate which was replaced with a recent production Fender USA neckplate. Therefore at best it is a parts bass with some parts that might be Fender. The sunburst looks Asian, most likely Tokai. The bridge is Gotoh probably. Asian bass mostly in my estimation. Not a Fender. Maybe a good player or maybe not, but it is about 4 times more expensive than it should be. Some of the Tokai basses play really good and with upgraded electronics can be made to sound okay. You have to throw about $125 more at them for the electronics upgrade. Should point out that Tokai was originally selected as the guitar and bass contractor for the Fender Japan joint venture, but at the last minute the contractor was changed to Fujingen Gakki. Tokai however did make Fender Japan instruments for a period when Fujigen shut down guitar production for a facility expansion project, however only Fender Japan guitars and not Fender Japan basses as bass production proceeded at Fujigen during the expansion. With the exception of Artist Series models all Fender Japan basses were made at Fugigen. The Artist Series models made outside Fujigen were made at Dyna Gakki. Tokai is a quality contractor, but for a while they were heavy into copying Fender instruments during the lawsuit era. Tokai was making instruments with the trademark Fender peghead headstock shape and Tokai headstock decals until Fender put a stop to it. Some of these lawsuit era models also got Ibanez decals too, but were mostly made by Tokai under contract. I think this may be one of those.
