Since mid 90's, I have been in possession of what I believe to be an American Standard Sunburst Precision Bass, manufactured (per Fender website) in 1976. The bass has a tortoise pickguard with two holes drilled below the G string similar to a number of older (mid-late 60's, early 70's) P basses for the thumb rest, but without the thumb rest installed.

Can anyone tell me the story on this year and the tortoise pickguard? Mine had been converted to fretless by the musician before me (20+ years ago) and the bridge replaced with a Bad $@!. I have one of the original knobs, but to my knowledge all else is original... any thoughts on value? I am especially curious about the pickguard and thumbrest story. I have seen a couple of similar guitars online with the tortoise guard and drilled but not installed thumb rest holes. I'm guessing that 76 was a phase-out year for the tortoise guards, but what is the deal with the extra holes???? Anyone?
Thanks

Alan, please post some photos to include the serial number. What did you get back when you ran your serial through guitar dater.org? Have you emailed your serial number to Fender and asked for all information? These are the places to start. Since your Precision isn't all original and is therefore player grade vs collector grade it is worth in the neighborhood of $1,500 dependent on many factors, such as where you live. I own a 1976 Precision that I bought brand new, and hot rodded in 1985 and I'd say $1,500 is fair market value if I wanted to sell mine. Brand new 2016 American Standard Precisions have been discontinued and are being blown out for $1,149.

I am not certain how to post photos, but the serial number on the plate behind the neck is 610601. In 90's, Before we had internet, we called Fender direct and they confirmed by serial number that it was American made, which agrees with what we found since on Fender's website.

Guitar Dater isn't infallible but here's what came back
Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in 1975
Production Number: 610601

Your asking price of $1,200 is reasonable.
