Hello,

I have a offer for a quite correct (low) price for a 79 Precision

Pictures are here : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zy31w9xblbo9y0r/AAA_BNZFJGdAdpdF3u8S6oRZa/PB%201978?dl=0

The body has been painted in red and the paint has been removed partly at the bottom.

- Looking at the pictures, does this seem to be a genuine 79 Precision ?
- how are these 79 usually rated ?

Thanks in advance

Luc

Replied but have no idea why the reply is not here. LOL. Here I go again. It is legitimate. Other than the strings and volume pot it is most likely all original. The volume pot was changed out by someone with limited soldering experience. 1979 P-Basses are no better than the 75-78 or 80-82's. All these are pretty much the same except for different colors and progressively more overwound pickup windings. The Fender P-Bass changed very little otherwise during the CBS era after about 1967. You can buy a 79 Collector Class all original Precision Bass here in 9 out of 10 shape including original factory case for $2000 USD or less. Since this is a player class instrument and they are worth half or even less than half of what a collector class instrument is worth you should try to keep total out of pocket expense including any refinishing expenses and a case to as much under $1000 USD as possible, because that is about what it is worth RETAIL here. The decal, pickguard, pickups and all metal hardware appears original but the bridge and pickup covers are missing. The tone cap is original and the tone pot may be original as well but can not confirm that since I could not read the entire code behind the cap. The body stampings, neck stamp code and checklist sticker appear authentic.

If the truss rod is functional then it is a good candidate for a professional body refinish, reassembly (possibly with a proper CTS pot) and pro setup to make it a good player class instrument. I have found that pristine excellent to near mint CBS era P-Basses often either play bad or sound bad or both. A P-Bass that looks to have been ridden hard and put up wet like this one is frequently one that plays and sounds better than the Collector Class examples.

Just catching up after being away, but that last sentence of BD's is absolute gospel. I have only found one mint vintage Fender EVER that plays nice, a 74P fretless, and that is one of very few on my NFS list. Much rather find a bass with good use, not abuse.
