Hi all,

I apologize for the stupid question
can someone help me to codify these two capacitors?

That made lentil was installed in my precison bass made in mexico
to rectangular shape I had at home ...
which capacitance value do they have?

thanks in advance,
Andrea.

503 = 0.05 mfd, 100 volts

104K= 0.1mfd, 250 volts

Google; capacitor number, 503 :wink:

As stated previously the round 503 one is a ceramic disc and is typically found in pre-CBS through CBS era Fender basses. It is the typical Fender bass value of 0.05uF.

The boxy red one is a radial lead metallized poly film cap typically used in higher voltage applications with a value of 0.10uf. It could be used in a passive bass tone circuit though.

Of the two caps you have the ceramic disc is the better choice for a passive tone control application on most Fender instruments. On MOST Fender basses a 0.05uf cap value is the best choice because the 0.10uf will cut too much upper midrange on all but the brightest sounding bass pickups, such as pre-1965 ones.

In a few rare cases in recent years a 0.10uf ceramic disc has been used by Fender on basses, typically ones with the brightest sounding pickups like the 62 and 57 American Vintage Reissues which used the Fender Original Precision Bass pickup. With that pickup a 0.10uf yields a more traditionally voiced Fender P-Bass tone, but there is absolutely nothing wrong in using a 0.05uf with that pickup either if you want a brighter tone. I like having the option to go brighter than typical on a passive bass myself as it has a tendency to surprise people who are not used to hearing a P-Bass sound like that.

I would not use a poly cap of any value myself but that is just me. I consider poly caps "middle of the road" between the edge of a ceramic disc and the clean of a paper in oil cap. I like using ceramic discs for added vintage edge and paper in oil Sprague Vitamin-Q types for the cleanest tone possible.

Unless you have a full range cab (with horn and good crossover) and a Hi-Fi clean amp or you are go direct into a console you probably will not hear much difference between cap types at all. The more you roll off highs and upper mids or boost bass the less type matters also. Combo amp users or users with no horns/tweeters or players that have a not so clean amp will hear virtually no difference between cap types at all, but the value still matters. Too high a cap value can cripple your instrument restricting it to muddy tones.

Hi brotherdave,
thanks for the information you have shared in the previous answer ...
I have done some experiments with different types of capacitors with 0.05uf value and 0.1uf
Indeed depending on the type of pickup used the 0.1uf value can be too ...

On my MEX with vintage58 pickup I find appropriate use 0.05uf, although I would like that the sound was a little warmer ...
