Hi all,
I have a standard precision bass made in mexico
I want to change the factory pickups with a fender pickup to improve the sound but I do not want to change the original tone fender

which of these two better?
Original Fender Vintage pickup or Fender Pure Vintage 58 pickups ?

in the fender website it says that the pickup 58 has more output ... 7-7-6 vs 5-5-4 (bass-middle-treble)
but which one is better?

Thanks,
Andrea.

Hi Andrea! Now that I know you are in Italy, hopefully I can be of better help. My favorite Precision sound of all time is this year's '63 AVRI Precision and it's very special split single coil pick up set. I don't know if you can get these or not, but they are my pick. If I were right handed I would find a way to acquire this bass as it is just that special.

Hi linnin,

I am happy with the work I've done to my jazz bass and I would do the same job on my precision
I purchase online from a store in germany
https://www.thomann.de/it/pickups_per_bassi_p_a_4_corde.html?filter=true&manufacturer%5B0%5D=Fender

I can buy one of these four pickups and among these four there is also what you tell me.
I am not very convinced because it seems that the output is a bit unbalanced down ... 7-6-5 (bass-mid-treble) very low and little treble
the other two pickups have a more balanced output

Thank you for your opinion

PS you have Italian origins?

Ok, of those four, I'd go with either the '62 or the '63 pickups. Both of those get rave reviews from those that actually own them. I listen to Mel Brown play them on Fender's videos on youtube. They are both killer and you can't loose. Pay no attention to some little three-way evaluation on the tone. That's meaningless to your ears and the ears of your audience.

No, I'm not Italian.

Ok, thanks
I'm curious ... why you do not like vintage 58?

Your mileage may vary. Fender Original Precision Bass Pickups are my favorites. No other P-Bass pickup I ever tried was as satisfying to me personally. I do not need to try any others. Once I find something I like and I have confidence in it I am loyal and tend not to go off the reservation. I do not know what kind of music you play, how you play, or your influences. So suggesting this pickup may be the worst advice ever given to you by anyone.

With this pickup Fender has typically used a 0.1uF tone capacitor instead of the common P-Bass 0.05uF because this pickup is brighter than any other current P-Bass pickup set. If you play finger style there is nothing wrong at all with trying the 0.05uF tone cap (the one probably already in your instrument) to see if you like it. I like the 0.05uF much better because it sounds so airy it could be mistaken for an active. And the tone control still does a lot so you can roll the treble off and go dark if you want. It sounds more like a First Generation P-Bass single coil pickup than any other split coil and it has no noise at all.

It is not tinny but is a full range pickup, it just has more upper mids than you might be accustomed to if you've been playing about anything else because most Precision pickups have been overwound since the CBS era. It is sort of like hearing a good stereo with tweeters for the first time. If you do not like an airy tone or if you play with a pick use the 0.1uF suggested tone cap value and I still think you will be happy.

It is not that I don't like the '58, it is just that I like the '63 better. Also the '58 has raised poles for the A string. That's OK with a vintage 7 1/4" neck radius, but is unusable with a modern 9 1/2" neck radius such as your Precision.

Hi Brotherdave,

thank you for writing your opinion
Now I just have to decide
I have heard from YouTube as bass precision with vintage pickup 58
It seems to me a nice warm and deep sound...
I play (bad...) a bit of everything but no metal and only with fingers.

Thanks for all,
Andrea.

Andrea, An Internet video on YouTube is probably not the best way to judge a pickup. Can you get to a dealer so you can play some different ones into your amp?

Hi brotherdave,

yes, I went into a store and I have tried a precision bass vintage_58 and one precision bass vintage_63
I asked to try a Fender Rumble 500 as my
I personally liked most and the sound "warm and round" of vintage _58

What do you think of raised poles of vintage_58 pickup installed on a low as my neck that has a radius of 9.5 inches?

if I buy the pickup Vintage _58
on my Standard Precision bass made in Mexico which connection diagram should I use?

this http://support.fender.com/service_diagrams/bass_guitars/019-2200_02A_SISD.pdf

or this http://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Original/10001/019-100A_SISD.pdf

Andrea.

Hi all,
I bought the pickup Original Vintage Fender Precision Bass
and I bought the pickup Pure Vintage 58 Precision Bass.

I have tried them both but of the two I prefer the Pure Vintage 58

I have done two experiments ...
I have connected them according to the American Standard scheme and
I installed the 58 Pure Vintage with original potentiometer and
I installed the Vintage 58 Pure with CTS potentiometers original parts Fender 250K A
this... https://www.thomann.de/it/fender_250k_controlsolid_shaft.htm

It can affect the potentiometer on the sound?

The capacitor and always the same, but the sound with the CTS potentiometers Original Fender parts in my opinion seems to be more "open" more "brilliant" I do not know how to say ...

What do you think? is this possible?

thanks Andrea.

Differing control pots can yield markedly different sonic results, usually due to variances in manufacturing tolerances among the myriad of available brands.

Use whichever parts sound the best to your ear.

Thanks a lot for the answer
I did not think that he felt so much a difference ...
I thought there was something wrong with the wiring

Thank you,
Andrea.
