Hi!

A friend of mine has a 1975 Precision Bass that is quite heavy. Recently he has got some longer gigs which makes the bass harder to wear during those performances.

Could you suggest some light weight Pbasses in the $0-1000 range? A little plus is fine.
I think he is really fond of the P-bass shape, neck and pickups, but feel free to suggest other brands as well.
It must be a player bass.

Take a look at Squier basses with bodies made of basswood. Much lighter and softer than either alder or ash. I think the bodies are a bit thinner too.

Ah-Ha! Here's an American Standard Precision that is the lightest out of four that Sweetwater has in stock: 8 pounds and 6 ounces!

So it looks like your friend can just take their pick and get a Precision less than 9 pounds.

I second this suggestion. Good quality instrument, slightly smaller body, definitely lighter weight.

Lousy electronics, and very problematic. Just ask PaulLF, as he owns one and those were his grips about it.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, keep them coming.

So Alder is a bit lighter than ash? And basswood is even lighter than Alder?
Oh, we are in Europe.

Oh, we are in Europe.

Supposedly alder is heaviest, and basswood lightest. I do know that basswood is softest and dents very easily. I, myself much prefer alder as a body wood and tone wood. My '76 Precision is very heavy alder with a heavy brass BadAss II bridge. It is just a Trump hair under 12 pounds. It's heavy but plays heavy too. For solid rock 'n' roll or 60's soul, I'll take my heavy '76 any time.

And I owned one for years and never had a lick of trouble with it.

I'm sure my friend agrees. His P-Bass is his go to instrument, his confidant.
Thanks for sharing that lovely alder photo.

But here we are talking about other things. So now I learn Alder is heavier than Ash?
Basswood is lighter than both and it is softer. The tone part I understand to be a matter of taste and maybe a trade-off?

Here is your average sq. ft. of dried wood by weight in lbs. :

Ash - 41
Alder - 28
Basswood - 26

Here's a post from TalkBass that strikes me as spot on form my experience.
" Basses vary in weight, it's an inherent characteristic of being made out of wood. Look at Jazz Basses. A light alder bodied one might be at or just under eight pounds and a heavy one could be over eleven. Ash has even greater variance."

This especially true about ash. I've been surprised by a heavy ash bass when I was expecting lighter. I'm firmly in the camp that alder is the superior tone wood.
