This new bass is an American Standard Precision Bass with a factory passive P/J pickup arrangement. Sounded like something I'd be real interested in trying out!

Then I saw the neck specs. This bass has a Jazz neck with a Precision Bass headstock decal. Huh? Yeah! Instantly deflated my interest. Maybe it will appeal to Jazz players who want to have some P-Bass tone, but no way is this for me. It is more of a passive Precision Bass Special but made in the USA. Totally was interested at first, now not interested at all. In fact more than a tad aggravated about it.

Fender, did you bother to survey any Precision players on this new Precision Bass model? Honestly did you? Whoever made the decision on the Jazz Bass neck profile, thank you for saving me a bunch of money! I'll just keep playing my old stuff.

Couldn't agree with you more. When I first saw it, I got a little misty eyed, my heart began to race, a little dizziness (all symptoms of G.A.S.) then like you, I read the specs.

Can't say I was disappointed. When was the last time Fender came out with something REALLY good?

Just be glad we have, or had the good instruments all those years ago.

Funny, my reaction was totally the opposite. I was figuring "Oh great, another standard model that misses the mark and will be forgotten tomorrow". Then I saw the specs and was sincerely hopeful. The P body with the combo pups and J neck are just what I've always looked for, especially in a passive bass. For me, the only small disappointment is the lack of color options.

But you know what? To each his own. That's what makes us all interesting, those differences.

That's what got me too, about the color options. But I guess since it's a limited run, that's all they're going to turnout.

I wonder why they always use Jazz necks on P Basses that have the P and J pickup combo? It doesn't bother me, since I'm use to a Jazz neck with Fender, but am curious. I've never seen the opposite with a Jazz bass with a P Bass neck, although they've had the Jazz Bass with P Bass pickups. I actually do like the looks of this bass, though. I think it might be the black pickguard with the P and J combo that I find appealing.

I currently have a 2015 Am Std Precision and a 1985 MIJ Jazz. Surprisingly, both necks feel basically the same size. I have had several Jazz basses and some of them felt considerably smaller near the nut.
I had a P/J bass that I built about eight years ago. It had a Jazz neck and I liked it a lot.
Here's a photo.

That looks like the bass in the topic. I think I would like that one. Does it have Custom Shop 60's pups?

Yeah, it does have the CS60's. Basically an Am. Std. Precision, with an Am. Std. Jazz neck, and Precision pup / Jazz pup.

Cool. I'm sure I'd like that one.
Our local Fender dealer offered me 15% over cost on my P bass and now he wants to make the same deal for an Am Deluxe Jazz. Wish I had the money.

That is a cool bass. If I had the cash, I'd buy it, too. 8)
