I was very excited to receive my new Am Std Precision bass today. Looking at it closely I notice it has a gap between the neck and body that to me looks larger than it should. The box arrived with gashes in it and a noticeable scuff on the back of the case...I can live with that but now seeing this gap I feel like maybe I should return it. Is the gap an issue or am I over reacting? I seriously don't know. I feel like the fit maybe isn't as snug as it should be and down the road it could be an issue? Please advise.

Good reasons to buy in person at a dealer. Most online dealers are good about exchanges or refunds in a case such as yours. Visit a dealer and compare gaps on basses of the exact same model if that is your main concern. But more importantly play a bunch. You can have 10 copies of the exact same model side by side and one or two of them will outshine the rest. That is my experience anyway.

Would you buy a car without a test drive? Probably not. So why buy a big ticket bass that way? I might come closer to buying direct from Fender if they had anything in the Design Experience thing that lit my fire. But I find the colors not very exciting. So if I was buying a new USA Fender bass I'd first look at brick and mortar dealers, not online.

Even though USA made the American Standards are mass produced. That is going to lead to variances. This has always been the case.

I would send it back merely because it got damaged in shipping, in fact I might have rejected it at delivery due shipping damage. I have bought lots of basses online, maybe about 12 that were not available locally except by special order or used ones, but new American Standards I have always without exception picked out in person and yes I go home empty handed way more often than finding one that I really like enough to actually consider buying.

I have never had shipping damage like you described even from eBay sellers much less reputable online dealers. I would send it back for that alone. You paid for a new case, not a damaged one.

Send it back. I had the same thing.

I also have 3 recent American Fenders that are perfect, which I used as the benchmark.

This is the gap that was on my 2014 American Standard Precision, when I got it new back in January 2015. It bugged me a little when I saw it :x as I bought it sight unseen (my choice), but over the last 17 months I just enjoy playing/owning this bass.
I am going to get it looked at just to see if there is anything that could be done, as I want to have the bass checked over anyway so we will see :) .

I get your point about playing the bass before purchasing. Unfortunately, I don't have a music store with 10 Am P basses to do that kind of comparison. There's a Guitar Center here in Fresno, CA that I will never buy from. Their inventory is not well maintained, dirty and I think they have at best 1 of these in stock at a time. I am more than willing to return defective product as the online stores make it pretty easy to do so. I prefer stores like sweetwater where you can actually inspect pictures of the actual bass before ordering. Musicians Friend is not like that....only reason I ordered it from them is a 36mo. 0% promo...otherwise I steer clear from them too. Would like to see better quality control from Fender but I suppose this will happen occasionally....hope the replacement coming is good...otherwise I will be sending it back and just cancelling the order and waiting for sweetwater to offer a promo.

Joe you have to travel around to different stores. Sorry I did not make that clear.
