I have my new Am P bass on order along with some 9050M flats that I will be putting on when it arrives. Will these strings fit the nut without having to file? They are .055 - .105. I believe the bass ships new with .045 - .105 roundwounds. I ask because I saw a post about someone needing to file the nut but not sure what bass it was.

Good question. It could go either way. There is some play in the nut slots but not a huge amount. Your nut may need some expansion to use those strings or it may work just fine. If it doesn't fit naturally do not force it. Cramming a too big string into a too small slot can cause jumpy tuning and worse. It can crack a chunk off the nut and this usually happens on the outside edge. (Voice of experience on the cracked chunk.) I would take it to a skilled bass tech for the first setup with those larger strings if they don't lay in the slot as they should. I do not have nut slot files and a micrometer, which you actually need to properly slot nuts.

When I get a new instrument (or one new to me) I figure out what strings I for sure want to use on it and then I have a professional tech set it up with them. After that I'm good indefinitely so long as I only use that same string set at each change and change them one at a time. Could I do the setup? Yes but someone who does setups all day does it better than I can. I had a really amazing bass tech for a while but he moved to Nashville.

You should be fine, but as brotherdave recommends at good setup by a pro technician or competent luthier is the way to go. Even if your nut slots don't need to be resized, setting the action at the nut is critical as is having the strings properly radiused to your neck. String height; pickup height, and intonation are all critical components of a professional setup as is checking neck relief and making any necessary truss rod adjustment.
