Hi. I live in Spain and they dont sell Imperial sized Allen keys here!

Please could someone here tell me the key size, and where I can buy one. I have emailed so many shop in the US who have no idea?

I tried 4 and 5mm but my old eyes just cannot guess what the key is. The neck has a tiny head with an almost jazz size nut my caliper says is 39.62mm. Truss rod screw access is in the head/neck!

If anyone knows where I can buy a wiring diagram I would be really greatful.
. My jazz pup is pretty tired but I have no idea what the output should be?

These bass' seem real rare now. Arthritus stops me playing my heavier basses and this little thing if light and really niced balanced, but any history you can tell me about this nice little bass would be really appreciated.

Sorry I ask so much. I hope its interesting queastions

Thank you in advance.

Check your eyes 39,62 mm is very very big, you may read 3.96 mm

Bass truss rod allen key look to be a 3/16 inches

I don't know much about the JP-90 basses, but that 3,962 mm would be very close to 5/32" (3,96875mm), which has been the proper size for some rare & oddball basses in Fender history...

I also don't know where to get imperial size wrenches in Spain. Maybe try googling European online stores.
A set like "Stanley 2-69-268" would come in handy; it has a set of metric, imperial and Torx keys.

If the 4mm key you have is too big, you could file the end so it's a bit conical.
Sometimes a Torx key also works, they are conical from the start.
But: the JP-90's have had their share of stuck and broken truss rods (if we trust the internet wisdom - and why shouldn't we...). So these at your own risk - and I'd suggest trying to lube the threads a good 24 hours before applying any major force.

I will not recommend it, you could damage truss rod nut.

Well, for me there is no significant difference if one DIY tapers a key, or buys a tapered StewMac Gripper - which you recommended in another topic. 8)

Not only will I not recommend this course of action, I can guarantee that it will cause more, if not irreparable, damage to the instrument. How can I guarantee it? I tried it before. Had to throw the neck away.

Don't do it.

I'd like to hear the story behind this, and especially
- what broke and
- how the breakage was related to the DIY-conical key (or Torx) you were using.

I've coned hex keys, probably decades before commercial versions came available, and used them on problematic (= partially damaged) truss rod nuts - can't even say how many times. Some truss rod nuts had to be replaced, but no bigger problems for me.

Common sense & caution is of course needed, as in all truss rod adjusting; no hammering the key in, no excessive force when turning, lubing before you start, etc.
(And still, a truss rod may (very occasionally) snap - with any key...)

Too many tools today are cheap and I see many Allen key/ wrench loose in head with right size written on them . This will dammaged a truss rud allen nut .
I see many Fender Allen wrench like that, I throw them in the garbadge.
I bought some good quality allen key which they are long enough and fit tight on head.

If you use the right allen key in a new truss rod head you'll never damage it.

That's avery wise and fine principle, which I also apply whenever possible.

Now, would you mind telling how it can be applied to this topic, or similar situations? The proper key size is unclear (it's a JP-90 from 1990 - I've found no definite answer and your 3/16" seems to be too big, quite possibly no standard will fit), the nut may already have suffered, the truss rod may be stuck since it apparently hasn't been adjusted in quite some time?
Heck, I've Dremeled a truss rod nut inside the neck cavity to make grooves so it could be taken off with a flathead screwdriver - luckily only once. Real proper key, new truss rod nut situation there...

My "quick fix tips" (for the Gripper, DIY-conical-key or Torx) aren't targeted for new guitar/bass with new truss rod nut situations...

There is no magic, you may buy a complete set of good allen wrenchs, metric and SAE.
It would be usefull all of your life.

You can also buy a nice bottle of real old single malt, six magic beans and a fishing rod.
None of those will help either, if no standard size quality allen wrench fits on a damaged truss rod nut.
But life feels a bit nicer.
