A few more pics and facts:

21 frets,
black pearloid dots on fingerboard
4 dots at the bottom of the fingerboard
5 bolt neck (and plate)
no American Design neckplate
70's style headstock decal
"American Deluxe" decal on headstock
serial number on back of headstock, not on the neckplate
no standard hang tag
no American Design paperwork of any kind
serial # verified by Fender customer service (though incomplete notations in their records for this serial #)

I'd still love to know anything more about this one, if anyone can shed any more light on it, such as:

Were the American Design neckplates always unique, even at the beginning in 2011?
What sort of tags/paperwork was common for American Design instruments in 2011?
What type of wood is the body?
Anything special about the pickups?

And lastly, would you call this a 2 tone or a 3 tone sunburst?

Maybe this is just a special order P bass Deluxe? No American Design?

Hello…? …hello …hello …hello …hello

I'm conversing to myself here. No one knows about this or the early days of the ADE?

UPDATE:
So I spoke with Fender again today and managed to turn up some fairly conclusive info. For one thing, an "American Design" bass is different than an "American Design Experience" bass. ADE is what they called the later online incarnation of AD. AD was something available only as a walk-in order when you visited the factory/museum in Corona, which began in 2011. AD never used special-made neckplates like ADE, nor did they have much paperwork. Basic case candy stuff, with no certificate. But they did offer some wildly unique parts to choose from, unlike the later ADE online. This bass here is likely a one-off! Anyway, it was assembled in November of 2011. The body is made of alder and uses American Standard pickups. The neck has a "C" profile and 9.5 " radius. Just wanted to update the thread a little.

I have a thread over on Talk Bass and updated it as well. 8)

That is a really beautiful bass Ghastly. I like the quilted top, but especially like the burst, (tobacco?), my favorite.
So how do you like the active mode? I assume it has passive mode too. The P/J style is very nice also. I had one that I made from parts and loved it.

The American Design Experience was something they had going at the Fender Visitor Center. It may still be happening today, I don't know. You could select from available materials they had in a stock area, then they would assemble it and ship it to you. That was it. I guess as inventory changed the choices you could make changed accordingly.... no maple fretboards in stock then it wasn't a choice. There was very little about it online. But some forum members went there and were disappointed that it wasn't assembled on the spot.

Thank you. 8) This is my first real experience with passive/active electronics. I'm really a passive guy (unless pushed too far! lol) But I like it. It's nice to be able to go from one to the other. Active gives more of an accent or "punch" when needed.

I lean toward passive too. I've owned a few intermediate active basses (other brands) that were okay, but not quite "there" playing them live. I'd like to have a newer American Deluxe Jazz in a fiver but it's out of reach right now. I really like the passive Fender tone though.
Health to play!
