Hi All,

I am on a quest to find my 'dream bass'.
It is a full original 1979-1981 Fender Precision Bass in the rare color "Monaco Yellow" (see link below)

Can somebody help me out here? :)

You can put out a wanted to buy feeler at various vintage instrument dealers. affprod might be able to help you out. You'd need to be serious and ready and able to buy. Do you have $2,000+ ready to go?

You're welcome, Clipps. If all you want is a Fender Precision in Monoco Yellow, you can just buy a good used Made in Mexico Fender and strip it. Any decent body shop could shoot on the new paint and clear coat it. You could get by for less than $600 total.

+1

That's how I'd do it. I've had Strats re-finned in an unavailable custom color for $300 or less.

I don't have a yellow bass. Never thought Fender made one until a few months ago, then was told about Monaco and Graffiti yellow basses. I think they're pretty cool, and someday I will add one - almost did recently. Not a color you can go to a USA GC and pick off the wall, mostly international sellers.

My biggest problem is, I am not nuts about the jazz or precision basses that used these two colors. The ones popping up when I peek around at late 70s and early 80s, not exactly Fender's finest years as CBS continued austerity measures.

But I love the color. Saw a Stu Hamm Urge proto on display at Hartke, NY. Really cool.

I found a yellow Strat clone on EBay. Neck and body are decent though the finish in areas you can't normally see was a bit sloppy. Pickups were so-so but of course they can be replaced. This was from a guy who has them made offshore and sells them cheaply. He admits that the body wood is not of the quality (visually anyway) you'd get from Fender, so they're only sold in solid colors. The neck and fretwork on the one I got were comparable.

I think I paid $300, so even with custom pickups and hardware, I got it for far less than the Graffiti yellow Strats I saw for sale. Not sure if he sold bass bodies too, but worth checking out.
