Hello,

After a lot or search (because tiny wallet) my hunt for a MIA Pbass is over I found a used but as new 2009 American Standard for a very friendly price. It's a kid dream coming true !

Image

But (in real life there is very often a "but").. but the previous owner changed the pickup for a Seymour Quarter Pound, and I would like to bring it back to a normal Pbass equipment (not that this QP is bad, but it's the fulfilling of my kid dream..), so I had a look at Fender website, and I am completely lost in the huge amount of Fender Pbass pickup available:

- Fender Custom Shop 62 P-Bass
- Fender Pure Vintage 58 P-Bass
- Fender Pure Vintage 63 P-Bass
- Fender Original (seems to be Original 62) Vintage P-Bass

Which one is the closest to the classical vintage PBass sound ?
In case this is on any importance my Pbass as a rosewood fretboard

To add to the confusion, Fender American Standard PBass page states : Custom Shop '60s Split Single-Coil Precision Bass

Thanks in advance

Luc

Congrats on your new purchase Istelie. That's a beautiful bass!
The Custom Shop 60's pickups in the the new Precisions are VERY nice. I have a 2015 P bass with them in it and it sounds very much like my old 63 P bass. It has an alder body and maple fretboard. I got it 2 weeks ago and I've gigged with it and recorded with it already. The sound is fantastic!
A few years ago I had a P/J with SD Quarter Pounders and liked them a lot, but the CS pups are the real deal.
Good luck in the chase!

I agree with Jim. The Custom Shop pick ups that are now stock (since 2012 I think) in the American Standards are great.

Howdy linnen.
Last year I put CS 60's pups in my MIJ 75 Reissue Jazz on your recommendation, along with some others here, and I've been very pleased with them too. CS pups are 'the bomb'.
Thanks again!

Luc,

That's a nice rig behind your bass. I know other guys who have combined a Markbass head and Eden cabs.

I use an Eden rig and love it! (No offense to Fender amps intended).

Is that a 1x10 or 1x12 cab?

Hello,

I live in a city (Paris/France) were rehearsal studios have equipment. I usually gig in small places and in this case I use public transports to go to the gig.

So I set up a rig small enough to be carried by public transportation when I need to move it (I don't own a car).

I use a Markbass Littlemark 250 that I bring with me most of the time, even for rehearsals,( because most places have Hartke head that I don't like), and when I have to go gigging I use this little Eden EX112 that is at the same time small, quite good sounding .. and light enough to be carried by hand (one hand).. very convenient set.

Image

Real life is not always perfect and sometimes I have to gig using the provided amp that is not always a gem. yesterday I had to play on a below-average Ashdown combo, with sound check done with an active bass (a JazzBass by the way) not only I didn't like my sound at all but I was barely able to hear me...

Image

To get back to your question, with the little Eden you will not break walls, and he doesn't have the industrial fan effet of a 8x10.. but for small places (bars..) it works quite well. It's not the cab of the century but the ratio price/sound/weight/size is really impressive

The Littlemark is also a highly effective and convenient head, small, rugged with a lot of inputs/outputs and great sounding.

But if Fender is kind enough to offer me a Bassmann 100T.. i'm in !!!!

I understand about using public trans. A bassist friend in London uses it all the time too and carries a small rig like yours. The small Eden cabs produce a big sound and they're light weight too.
Here's my small rig. Eden D112XLT and WTX500, with Fender Aerodyne Jazz, of course.

I have to agree with the group on the pickups. I purchased Lindy Fralin vintage pups to test, and have them in a 63P. They are very nice. I like them a lot. But to be honest, Fender is as nice for less money.

Steve

PS. Very nice bass.

Hello guys,

After a lot of reading this forum, I decided to start by a Original 62... considering the low price of Fender pups..i'll see and change if... but I'm afraid that my bassist level is below any Fender pickup level so...

Luc, I hope you like them as much as I do mine. They should give you that vintage 60's vibe.
Good luck!

This is my FAVORITE Fender P-Bass pickup and the one I would have recommended.

A few points about it. It has flush mount sand cast Alnico 5 pole pieces, vintage correct cloth insulated lead wires, vintage correct fiberboard bobbins. vintage diameter enameled coil wire, the crucial integral grounded shielding baseplate wired to ground with mounting foam already installed and it is wound to pre-CBS specs. It is the pickup that was used on the 57 and 62 AVRI, both of which are sadly discontinued. The Fender Original is virtually identical to the CS 62 while being less expensive. I have also used Fralin vintage wound, SD Antiquity and Wilde pickups by Bill Lawrence. They are all good but frankly the one I like better is the Fender Original. The fact the Original's price is the most affordable is just a bonus. Like the CS 62 it comes wired up to and mounted upon the brass baseplate.

The main thing I've noticed by using the Original are the liveliness of the tone. The fuller range, especially the upper mids. is so apparent it is like a smack in the face and something lacking in most split coil passive P-Bass pickups because they are overwound which kills the upper mids. In the 62 and 57 Fender upped the tone cap value to 0.1 uF from the usual Fender 0.05 uf tone cap to tame the brightness a bit and make it more pick player friendly. When you use it with a 0.05 uf cap and play finger style it sounds almost active! I have a 0.05 uF in mine and am almost exclusively a finger style player. My favorite finger style tone is the bright biting cut through tone of a real first generation P-Bass or 68-71 Telecaster Bass. When using a 0.05 Vitamin-Q cap with the Original P-Bass pickup I get a tone that is very close to the vintage Fender single coil with way better RF and hum rejection and a lower noise floor than my first generation basses. As with the Telecaster/first generation single coil pickup with the 0.05 value cap it can get really clicky when playing with a pick. I think that is why Fender used a 0.1 cap frequently with this pickup and for pick players I'd recommend upping the cap value to 0.1 when installing a Fender Original. However finger style players need to at least try the 0.05 value because of the startling brightness. It gives the tone control a lot more control. I really love it like that.

I think the Fender Original is the single best pickup value going. But you have to know up front if you are a pick player that you are probably going to want to up the cap value to 0.1 uf right off the bat and probably when installing it.

Another point about it is that distortion injection from cap type selection will more heavily impact this pickup because of the strong upper mids. This is ESPECIALLY true if you use full range cabs with horns. This pickup, along with the Fralin Vintage, CS 62 and SD Antiquity all truly behave a lot like a single coil pickup in tonal voicing and like a single coil P-Bass pickup, especially with a 0.05 cap, they react more to cap type selection than other split coil P-Bass pickups. If you like a lot of edge in the tone use a vintage ceramic disc. If you want a middle of the road tone use a poly such as a Sprague Poly OrangeDrop or Fender chicklet. If you want ultimate smoothness then go with a Sprague Mylar OrangeDrop (a tougher find than you might think which costs about the same as a Poly OrangeDrop) or a Sprague Vitamin-Q or any of the Vitamin-Q clones like the Russian ones or Gudeman's or Philco's. Tone cap TYPE will have far more impact on this pickup, the CS 62, the vintage Fralin or SD Antiquity pickups than most garden variety P-Bass pickups. In general the more overwound a P-Bass pickup you have then the less tone cap type matters because the less upper mids there are to distort. Here it matters a LOT.
