Obviously a bass in the hand is worth at least two birds!
Excellent story of love lost then found again.
On a side note - My ex wife listed all my musical equipment on the asset list at property settlement time.
It should be said I had all my toys well before I met her - but she is a greedy b***h after all.
Fortunately I... ahem, cough cough... "sold it all to some guy I met at the local pub for $600 - allegedly -
and had a receipt to prove it.
Come settlement day I asked his Honour that, providing I could get it back, could he possibly to ask her to play something for us all?
I have my gear.

What a cool story! I'm from Utica and got my start just a few years later, in 67 ... when I gave up violin (not much call for it in rock then) for guitar. I got the guitar and an amp from my uncle who was in a 'Cuse area band around 64 - 66. Relevant to your story, it was my aunt (my mom's sister) who pretty much forced him to sell the rig to me 'cause they were evidently a bit behind in the bills.
