Recently played this festival with a bunch of punk, metal, ska & rock bands. Ok, so I counted 8 Jazz basses, one Ibanez SR & one Precision...MY OWN!!! The Jazzes sounded good, but not great like my American Standard, in my very biased opinion. I saw at least one American Standard Jazz, but still, no WOW factor in tone. I know a guy that only plays Jazz basses & it sounds phenomenal, but he wasn't there & still heavy, heavy Jazz representation in a genre that Precisions ruled. It just came as a shock that so many folks love their Jazz, but Precisions are underappreciated around here. Next bassist I see wielding a Precision I'm gonna give 'em a big hug.

On hearing about the big hug, I'm glad I play a Jazz.

Hahaha Now please don't get me wrong, Jazz basses are cool & to each their own. I'm actually kinda interested in playing a 70s Jazz that's currently available; GAS attack, I would say. Just thought there'd be more Precision representation...but I'm happy to be in a league of my own, VERY happy about it :-)

I've had some Precisions that were really good. I'll agree with you about basically playing what's right for a player. Jazzes have been my main Fender for forty five years, that's all. Image

Looks like Jazz Basses are invading Precision territory. Both are very different animals. Most people shy away from the the Precision of it not having a bridge pick up.

I like them both equally for different reasons, although I have noticed I've had more Jazz basses than Precision basses over the years. I'm also a fan of the P and J configuration, which is kind of a compromise between the two for tones. My P Bass Lyte is set up like that, but I do have slightly more of the P pick up in the mix instead of level between the two.

You really have to have both. Of course, I have a gas problem and have enough of each to supply most third world countries, but each has their place. I find, due to the music I primarily play now, I have a p on more often than a j. But it is very few gigs where both are not on stage.

I prefer the sound and feel of the Precision, but I prefer the look of the Jazz. Here again that is probably because the P-bass fits in with the style of music I play.

I think lots of times what model instrument people start out with depends upon what instrument their primary influence or influences wield in public. Not necessarily what they like themselves, because often they don't really compare them. Nothing sounds like a true vintage American P-Bass. Nothing sounds like a Jazz either. Different strokes for different folks. Changing from one to the other as a primary instrument is harder than you might think. I like P-Basses and P/J's but not so much Jazz basses. Jazzes don't last long with me. I buy them because they are pretty but sell them because they just don't feel or sound right to me.
