I have a '98 MIJ Fender Jazzmaster (candy apple red), and I love it! I've heard a lot of different things, though, stating that the pickups used in those Jazzmasters are actually more like Strat pickups instead of like the original Jazzmaster pickups.

I happened to notice today that the Squier Vintage Modified JM has Seymour Duncan pickups and also the lead circuit that so many JM variants w/ humbucking pickups leave out. What differences (besides the pickups, obviously) are there in the electronics of my '98 MIJ JM and the Squier VM JM w/ Seymour Duncans?

I'm interested in obtaining as authentic a JM tone as possible without losing the lead circuit and reducing hum as much as possible. So, what would I need to change in my '98 JM besides the pickups to accomplish that?

Are you talking about this VM Jazzmaster?
The pickups are "Duncan Designed™ JM-101B Single-Coil Jazzmaster with Alnico 5 Magnets".

There is no separate VM-JM wiring diagram on the support pages, so I guess it's safe to guess the VM is wired like the "standard" Jazzmasters.
And while on the subject, & on 'a note to Fender' basis: it would be nice if squierguitars.com had the wiring diagrams on the product page, just like on fender.com pages. After all, Squiers are prone to be modded. At least publish them on the F-com product pages.

On that "Stratlike" sound: the MIJ pickups have different bobbins & coils, so the sound also differs from vintage JM's - somewhat.
For an authentic JM sound, Lollars, Creamerys or the high end but affordable Rautia would IMHO be the next best thing to authentic vintage pups/JM.

Proper wiring, shielding & playing in an environment without excess electric interference reduce the hum. And, as a very subjective opinion, humbuckers don't belong to Jazzmasters - although I believe the swap would be doable quite easily (maybe give a thought to pot values).
BTW, I wonder if anyone tried a dummy coil for taming excess JM hum..? Fender..?
