It's kinda cliche but I started out on a standard MIM strat. Musicians Friend lists them at $400, but there's a ton of used ones out there if you want to go lower. Other Mexican strats or teles could be in your price range as well, and both are very versatile instruments. I don't know if you've considered looking at other makers *gasp* but you might wanna try that too if you can't find the right Fender. Good Luck with your search and remember the sound and feel of an instrument is all opinion so look for one that you feel good with.

It may not be the best type of guitar.... but I saw go Squier. They're very cheap, good for the price and you can mod them without worrying if you're destroying a great guitar :D

If you can't find a good used Fender at an affordable price, you could always buy an older Samick Strat copy. Samick makes guitars for most of the major manufacturers and if you can get one from their Korean plant, you will get a super guitar.
I have a small collection of Samick guitars, all have maple fretboards @ 16 in radius. Real flat and super fast. The electronics are very good also.Guitars sound great.
I also have a Gretsch G5120, that was made at the Samick plant in Korea. Hard to find a better guitar.
Just my opinion, but for a beginner, Samick is the way to go if you can't afford the best.

I would buy a Fender Starcaster.......these are the least expensive of any out there and if you set them up correctly, they sound great!! You can usually pick them up in a package deal for under $200 including the amp, gig bag and in some cases headphones and stand.

Then when you get to the point when your playing well, you can buy a Fender for whatever style of play you enjoy the best (Telecaster for country...Strat for Rock....etc.).

On the flip side, if you decide you dont like the guitar, you wont be out much money and you can sell the set up on ebay and not loose very much money.
