I was fortunate last year to purchase a 1984 Fender D'Aquisto Elite and it's a great guitar to play - superb! The only problem is a couple of the tuning machines seem to have hysteresis - meaning you have to go a certain amount before there's any change, then it's too much, and then you go back. I saw in another forum that the Machine Heads on the guitar are Elite Chrome. I'm wondering if I should change the machines and if so what would be the best option or if I should leave it all original.

Are you sure it is the tuners , not the nut string guides worn out ?

Why dont't you go to see a qualified luthier for a opinion ?

I agree fully with st52; take it to a good luthier for a check and setup. Probably something to do with the nut/cleaning/lubing/tightening section.

On the upgrade/keep-as-original issue: Congrats on the catch. These D'Aquistos are quite rare, and already some kind of collectibles. So, keep it as original as possible.
If you have to do changes to keep it playable, only do things that can be fully reversible and preserve all original parts. (Like, if you happen to have defective gear wheels or such, try to find replacement parts before changing the whole tuning machines.)

Thanks for the suggestions - I did have it to one luthier, but I'm not going to do anything before I get a second opinion.
