I want to buy a new (or used) Jazzmaster. I like what I've read and
heard about the Troy Van Leeuwen Jazzmaster. My only concern
is the sound.

All the videos I've seen show off the way the guitar handles rock.
And it's great.

But I'm concerned the pups might be too hot for getting that
pristine Fender, surf sound. Lots of reverb, tremolo/vibrato, etc.
And . . . clean!

I have a lot of guitars, including Strats and Teles. (Including my
'83 USA Tele Elite.)

I want this JM strictly for surf music. Shadows, Ventures, etc.

I also read that this model (MIM) has a slightly rigid bridge???
The trem bar action is one of the main reasons for buying this
guitar.

I also read that even though it's a high end MIM, it comes
pretty much not set up. And will require a full set up.

Should I look at a different JM model? I'd like to stay in the $900/$1200 range.
I love the looks and appointments of the TVL. Just not sure about the pups.

Anyone have a comment . . . or a nice JM for sale! LOL

That Jazzmaster has American Vintage '65 Jazzmaster pickups so it would work for surf music. If you wanted to go a little cheaper you could also get the Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster. As long as you have a very good reverb and a delay or echo pedal you will be able to get that nice drip surf sound. I've found with any new guitar more than likely it usually needs a professional setup but once in a while it arrives perfectly setup.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't want to go cheaper unless I happened to find one used.
But the only ones I found used were either vintage real 60's
guitars (in the $3k to $17K range) or Squiers.

I like the TVL model. Looks awesome. I also really like the upper
horn 2 way toggle, and the fret markers are great!

And the color . . . Love it!

Funny, I found a used one on ebay for $1029, and my price on a
new one is $1080, shipped to my door. The new one does have
a couple add-ons I plan to do anyway, but no warranty. And it's used.

Thanks again. I gotta give my guy a call and tell him to order me one.

The bummer is . . . they're back ordered 4 to 6 weeks.

You will love the guitar when you get it. Takes some getting used to with all the knobs and switches. I play more than a few surf tunes usually play them right after a metal song. The looks on peoples faces are priceless but they get into it.

I've always thought of the Jazzmaster as a Jazz or Blues guitar, while the Jaguar was the one used by many surf bands.

tvr1979, most people believe the Jaguar to be more surf than a Jazzmaster but when a lot of surf guitarist try a Jazzmaster they don't go back. You don't get more surf than Bob Bogle who plays a Jazzmaster.

Sounds good, doesn't it? Didn't surfer bands mostly use Strats and Jaguars for lead, and Jazzmasters for rhythm? I think the Ventures used to use Mosrites w/P90's for awhile until Mosrite stopped furnishing them, that would give a Jazzmaster sound.

tvr1979, I really love listening to surf music. Call me crazy but i could listen to Metallica, Gilmour, Trower and throw some surf tunes in between.

Strats and Jaguars were the 2 mostly used guitars for surf music back in the day. From what I've read the Ventures used Mosrites back at that time and moved to Jazzmasters. From my own personal experience I play mostly strats and eventually added a jaguar to my collection. When I bought my first jazzmaster I fell in love with the sounds I could get out of it so I sold the jaguar. Still no matter what guitar you use(strat, jaguar or jazzmaster) without a very good reverb and slap back or echo pedal you won't be able to get that surf sound especially that classic drip sound.

NYstan, in the early 60's there was a Colorado surf band called "The Astronauts". They used to play live at Boulder (Colo. Univ.) bars. Used to listen to them often. Look them up on YouTube, think you"ll enjoy their sound.

I like their rendition of Suzie Q.

One of today's surf bands The Coffin Daggers did a great live rendition of Pink Floyd's Interstellar Overdrive.

Also this is a terrific studio song by them.

I had a Jaguar -- but found the sound slightly too thin for surf lead. I switched to the Classic 60's Jazzmaster. With the switch in the middle position, it sounds perfect to me. Of course who could argue with Dick Dale's use of a Strat. You could even put a Bigsby on a Tele for that matter and get a really twangy surf sound.

I have one of the first classic player Jazzmasters from 2008. I actually lowered the pickups and they got this very vintage sweet tone. I have played. 1996 Ventures Model Jazzmaster. Tone was pretty equal. I am a Ventures Fanatic. This baby will surf. I have a Jag and a Bass VI.....my Surf Trio. I LOVE my Jazzmaster

That oxblood finish does look pretty nice.

If you like Surf (which I do), check out Rautalanka. It's an early '60s rock genre from Finland. The name means "iron wire". It's more similar to Surf than, say, Eleki is to Surf, but it still has a fairly unique sound. Typically lots of Fiesta Red Strats with tape echo and maybe an organ.
My favourite Rautalanka revival band (at the moment) is Laika & The Cosmonauts.
