I just fully shielded all my Jazzmaster's cavities and some of the pickguard (whatever I could without removing electronics) with conductive copper tape. The reason I didn't fully do the pickguard (apart from being lazy) is because it's already got some kind of aluminum material on it that supposedly does some shielding already, and also I don't really need to completely quiet the guitar anyway, just any improvement would be better. It's a MIJ Jazzmaster so ever since I went from the lightly wound stock pickups to much tighter wound Peter Leonard's it's gotten alot noisier.

Anyway, so after shielding there didn't seem to be any difference :/ If it's because I didn't fully do the pickguard, shouldn't there have been at least some improvement? I thought what's more likely was that I didn't do any kind of grounding. I've read some things that say it is necessary and others that it isn't. The MIJ JM grounds to the trem piece from I think the main volume pot? Could I solder that wire to the shielding (pot>shielding>trem)? Would that be sufficient? Or do I need to make a direct connection from the shield to the jack sleeve somehow?

Thanks for any help

edit
By aluminum material I mean the rear of the pickguard is a reflective surface as it came from the factory. I've read apparently this aids in shielding.

Shielding is not simply putting copper tape .

Coper tape pieces may need to be solder together to have good electrical contact and must be connected to guitar ground .
And all guitar ground must be good

First , are you sure your problem is coming because your guitar is unshielded ?

Well it's the conductive adhesive stuff you get from stew-mac, I thought as long as they all completely overlapped you don't need to solder them together? But grounding though, can I make a connection to the shielding in the existing ground wire?

And I suppose I'm not totally whether or not shielding is the issue. But my guitar got alot noisier when I went from the stock japanese Jazzmaster pickups (basically strat single coils) to actual Jazzmaster pickups. I've read it's common for japanese JM's to get noisier after pickup swaps because the stock pickups are so lightly wound that shielding wasn't necessary. Also when I turn my guitar in certain directions the noise decreases significantly (before and after shielding).

Soldering is better and it is recommended

Sure , if not, copper shielding don't do the job

Finding why you have noise in a guitar need some know how . Many good books show how to .
