Helo Miguel108,

I suggest you head over to you local
music store that stocks fenders
and strum a few, see what turns you on.

Myself I like the Stratocaster.

Best of luck on your choice.

Cheers.

Honestly, the best way to choose a guitar is to play a few and see which one fits you best. I would have to say that the Telecaster is a wonderful beginning guitar. It's very basic, but has a great bright sound. It's perfect for country picking, and also for more classic punk. My personal "hero," Kurt Cobain also played one from time to time.

Also if you want a hotter sound for grunge or more distorted rock, the Mustang is great. It's pickups are absolutely sizzling.

Get the best Fender that is within your budget. I agree the MIM Strat is a good place to start.

Dont want to sound redudant but until you know what kind of sound you really like and what set-up goes with your style, try all the guitars you can before you take a choice.....you are on the right path anyway, if you start with a fender.
(I would go with a standard tele for starters, but a mustang is also a great option)

Go with a Squire. They are inexpensive, and they sound AWESOME. I currently perform with my Squire Stratocaster Affinity Series. Perfect guitar for starting out with.

I have a Squier Standard Strat in Cherry Sunburst, love the color and the way it plays, use it just as much as my MIM Strat. Stays in tune and I love the neck on it.

Use your Ears,If you dont know how to play, ask a friend that plays to go with you and play different Fenders. If you go to Sam Ash, or Guitar Center, ask one of the salesmen or woman to play some of the guitar/amps and pick one that sounds good to you. This may sound like an embarrasing thing to do, but whats more embarrassing than spending your hard earned dollars on a guitar/amp that you dont like the sound? I have a FenderSE Strat with a Fender Stage 160 amp. Thats what sounded good to me. The guitar has a low action, and comes with Semour Duncan pickups. This guitar has a great tone, and does'nt cost as much as the USA. I have never had the opportunity to play a Squire, but I have seen them and read up on the reviews. There seems to be a lot of people that like them. If you are just learning, this might be a route to take. Then, when you start getting better, you can always upgrade.
I started with a Washburn 120, Then upgraded to the Fender. I still have and play the Washburn(be nice guys) but I play my Fender the Mostest.
Hope this helps,
J

I started with a Mustang back in 1967 but I was doing surf/early rock and that sort of thing. I was also stepping up from a $10 nylon string that I started taking lessons with. Still, as someone else suggested, a Mustang isn't a bad choice to start with -- relatively low cost and great for learning open chords and fingering.

For overall modern versatility, you might consider the Squire Tele models -- a couple of friends have them and they're not bad at all. Very playable for the price. Then again, I have an MIM Tele Thinline 72 Repro that's very playable, reasonable price and decent on blues and light jazz but still picks up the country twang quite nicely.
