Hey Guys,
I'm new here and i just wanted to ask a quick question. I've been looking around for a new electric for a little while to get some nice single coil tones and i have pretty much settled on either a Classic Player Jazzmaster Special or the American Special Telecaster (I have also tried a like the MIM Nashville Deluxe Telecaster). They are in a similar price range, and price is not a majorly limiting factor, so if you have other suggestions then please share. Versatility is good, but i have a two humbucker guitar already and don't see the need for more humbuckers.

I'm not interested in strats whatsoever, so please, don't suggest them :P

Cheers

The Tele will give you more distance from the signature humbucker tone than the Jazzmaster will. As cost is not a limiting factor, you might consider the American Standard over the American Special for that "true" Telecaster single-coil tone. Cheers!

I had thought of that, but doesn't the american standard have steel saddles rather than brass ones? how much impact does that have on the tone?

And which one is better for a light to medium overdrive?
Cheers

True, the steel, 6-saddle bridge config of the Standard will have some degree of influence on the tone (brighter than a traditional brass 3-saddle), though the higher quality electronics/pups of the Standard will likely have a greater influence on Tele tone I think you are seeking.

The Special will likely "run hotter" in an overdrive scenario, though you should be aware that the "Texas Specials" supplied with the Special are inferior to the Custom Shop Texas Specials (no base plate, no wax potting, mass produced).
Also, the Special sports Jumbo fretwire. Personally, I'm not a fan, but your mileage may vary...
Good luck!

Jazzmaster is definitely cool. I was seriously considering one recently, myself, but the Tele is classic. It just doesn't get any better than a Telecaster, IMO.

If cost is not an issue, then go with a 52 Reissue Tele.

Classic tones, can play just about any style you want on one...very versatile.

my trouble is i love the jazzmaster as well though! i particularly like how nels cline of wilco uses a jazzmaster....

My favourite single coil sound is the neck pickup rather than the bridge. I know the tele is famous for its bridge sound, so does this information make any difference? I'm also not too bothered about classic the sound is, i want a kinda unique sound. If a tele gets me there, great, but also if a jazzmaster does that would be cool!

If your undecided on a tele or jazzmaster try the Squire VM series of one of them to see if it's what you want. They're $300, so it wont break the bank if it's not for you.
I picked up a VM Jazzmaster earlier in the year to see if it fit and I love it.
My main guitar is an Am. deluxe strat which plays real nice but I play this Jazzmaster all the time. It took me a while to break down and buy a Squire, but now that I have I'll definitely buy another, probable a tele.

Fully agree. The Squier VM Jazzmasters are fantastic guitars and I have the first one which is now called the special that has the hardtail bridge and no whammy bar and that guitar suits me perfect. The Duncan pickups which are specked out by Seymour himself, are fantastic sounding in my opinion. If you are a true player then you will truly appreciate these guitars as they are bang for the buck and should not be discounted as inferior guitars. I think a lot of players are quietly loving their Squiers.

So its been a while, but i have now definitely decided that it is going to be a telecaster over the jazzmaster. The question now is american special or american standard as there seem to be mixed opinions about this. I have played both, and tbh there were bits i liked and didn't like about both. I want the best quality i can get, so is it worth going the full whack for the standard, or does the special - which for me felt like a great guitar - worth it? Pickups are obviously the main thing here with the standard getting custom shop pickups.

Also i would at some point LOVE to put a bigsby on it, so any suggestions with this in mind - are some models better suited to retro fitting a bigsby on than others?

Finally, how much of a difference does the maple or rosewood board make to the tone? Aesthetically i prefer the maple, but there is a reduced price version of the special available on thomann with a rosewood board that would save some money.

Cheers

Glad you went with the tele!

Maple necks seem brighter to me and rosewood warmer. Both my teles are maple but next will be rosewood.

As far as Bigsby is concerned, have seem some advertised in Guitar World that claim to be removable. Put it on and later don't like it or decide to put it on another tele you just take it off. Looks like it is anchored by the strap button screw. No extra drilling.

My MIM Roadhouse has Texas Specials. I was going to upgrade it with CS Texas Specials and put the MIM in an old Squier. Guitar Center talked me out of it saying I would never notice the difference. Maybe time for me to rethink it.

I have an Ash Tele and an AmStd Tele and I primarily play blues and some Jazz (e.g., pop Jazz and classics, not heavy fusion). I use light/moderate OD for soloing primarily, occasionally for chording and I find that either Tele sounds great for that use. There are very subtle sound differences between the two under ideal listening conditions, but not in reality at gig volume, so I use them interchangeable. (The Ash tele is slightly heavier, so I typically start the gig with that.)

So my recommend is that I think a stock AmStd Tele is the all-around best combination of playability, sound and price. Or at least, to toss in my disclaimer, when you're playing a variety of genres and sounds, rather than just one or two.
