I played a friend's 1965 Mustang Guitar and the neck was both thinner and narrower than on any guitar I have ever seen. I was wondering if any of the new Mustang guitar come with the same small neck. It was almost as if the neck was made for a younger student. My hands are small and I really liked the neck.

I would appreciate any comments.

That's exactly the clientele the Mustangs were targeted to :)
Check out how you like the '65 Classic.
And maybe check out some Jaguars, too - just guessing, but it may be your hands liked the 24" scale feel as much as the neck shape.

+1

In 1965, Fender offered four different fretboard widths on many of its guitars and basses: "A", "B", "C", and "D", with the most common size (their "standard") being the "B". The "A" neck was approximately 1/16" narrower while the "C" and "D" were correspondingly wider. It's possible your friend's Mustang is one of those rare "A" necks. If so, it would likely be marked as such on the heel of the neck.

I have just about decided that the Kurt Cobain Mustang is about the closest I can get to what I want. I like the idea of the Humbucker pickup for a more versatile sound. It has the 1.625 width and radius is 7.25.

I have listened to it on youtube but so far have not found any music stores nearby where I can play one.

I see that AMS has one that was returned and now selling as a dent and scatch for $720. I don't really care if it has some small imperfections as long as it is setup well. I get varying reports on how well these guitars are setup by the factory or the stories selling them. Some indicate problems with the tremolo and other say the intonation is very bad. However, AMS has a good return policy.

Any opinions would be appreciated.
