I'm a life-long woodworker and furniture builder by trade and I can really appreciate nice work.

That guitar is outstanding! My first Fenders were also sunbursts.

CRGuitarMan,

Thanks for the nice comments. Sunburst is one of my favorite finishes on a guitar.

Long story short, bought this guitar in El Paso, Texas in the 60s.

I have very few pictures of this guitar with the original finish, but here is what it looked like in 1969 at a gig at the Officer's Club on George AFB, CA:
(I used the "Hoss" hat for laughs when we played some country songs)

Stationed in Mons, Belgium from 1971-1975. Guitar got stepped on at a band practice session sometime in 1973 and took a chunk of paint out of the top left edge. I couldn't stand the way it looked, so, I had it re-finished by a Belgian carpenter while I was stationed there in the USAF.

Jump forward to 2014. I liked the new finish on the guitar, but I still preferred the original Sunburst. Finally decided to get it re-finished again and I found a luthier near me in Apple Valley, CA. J.C. Harper: http://jcharperluthier.com/index.html. He had done set-up work on a couple of my guitars that I was satisfied with, so I recently took my Jazzmaster in for a re-finish back to the original Sunburst. These are the before photos:

As soon as I took off the original tort pick guard, it shrunk and would no longer fit. Found a custom tortoise shell pickguard dealer. Mark at http://spitfiretortoiseshellpickguards.wordpress.com/ made me a custom guard for my Jazzmaster: (He also does Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jaguar, and Precision Bass pick guards)

My original pick guard:

Got the guitar back a couple of days ago. I am very happy with the result. John did a great refinishing job and his price was reasonable. Here are the after photos:

I know, some people think is it blasphemy to refinish a vintage Fender guitar, but hey, it's my guitar and I like it better this way. :D
I've owned it for 52 years and will probably keep it until I die.

That is one cool looking guitar!
