Long story short, bought this guitar in El Paso, Texas in the 60s.

I have very few pictures of this guitar with the original finish, but here is what it looked like in 1969 at a gig at the Officer's Club on George AFB, CA:
(I used the "Hoss" hat for laughs when we played some country songs)

Stationed in Mons, Belgium from 1971-1975. Guitar got stepped on at a band practice session sometime in 1973 and took a chunk of paint out of the top left edge. I couldn't stand the way it looked, so, I had it re-finished by a Belgian carpenter while I was stationed there in the USAF.

Jump forward to 2014. I liked the new finish on the guitar, but I still preferred the original Sunburst. Finally decided to get it re-finished again and I found a luthier near me in Apple Valley, CA. J.C. Harper: http://jcharperluthier.com/index.html. He had done set-up work on a couple of my guitars that I was satisfied with, so I recently took my Jazzmaster in for a re-finish back to the original Sunburst. These are the before photos:

As soon as I took off the original tort pick guard, it shrunk and would no longer fit. Found a custom tortoise shell pickguard dealer. Mark at http://spitfiretortoiseshellpickguards.wordpress.com/ made me a custom guard for my Jazzmaster: (He also does Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jaguar, and Precision Bass pick guards)

My original pick guard:

The custom Spitfire pick guard:

Got the guitar back a couple of days ago. I am very happy with the result. John did a great refinishing job and his price was reasonable. Here are the after photos:

I know, some people think is it blasphemy to refinish a vintage Fender guitar, but hey, it's my guitar and I like it better this way. :D
I've owned it for 52 years and will probably keep it until I die.

That's just breathtaking, Jerry!

As pretty as the pinup gals in a pre-PC Snap-On Tools calendar.

Jerry....Now that gets a Schaweet to the 2nd power on the T2 Scale! Very nice job the guy did, you wouldn't know it wasn't an original sunburst!

And no stones to throw from here, you had a tasteful refin done to YOUR guitar! I am not usually a fan of tortoise pickguards on sunburst, but that new one looks great!

Congrats on refurbing an old friend!

T2

That's a beautiful refinish, the guitar looks brand new. It must be heartwarming to have such a close piece of your personal history restored to such beautiful condition.

I would not consider that a re-fin (since it was already stripped) but a re-storation and it is amazing. Like a new lease on life for it. Your biggest problem might be convincing some it is not a custom shop reissue but an original 62, if that is really a "problem" The job at least from the pics seems very very well done.

Simply gorgeous and are those the original pickups and if not, what are they? I also like the adapter on the bridge to keep the string angle low.

musicmatty,

Yes, those are the original pickups. Everything but the paint and pickguard are original on this guitar, including the case.

Thanks for the nice compliments.

Do you have any YouTube video clips of this guitar in action now ...I would love to hear something.

That natural finish looked pretty darn good (much better than most such finish jobs I've seen over the years), but that fresh new sunburst is just spectacular.

The figuring on the back of the guitar is quite unique.

Man, I wish I had that guitar. Where do you live? Huh?

I don't have anything right now. I may put something up a little later on, but I'm not a very good guitar player. :D
