I am trying to restore this vintage Fender Duo Sonic neck. I bought a wood bleaching kit from Rockler and have gotten rid of some of the stains. Now I have to see about filling in the chips next to the tuner holes. They also need to be doweled because someone drilled them out. The ferrules should cover the dowel so it won't be noticeable. Is there any good wood filler out there that would match this? Plastic Wood is a little bit too light.

This is how I'd do that:
1. Remove all that PlasticWood (cleaning the dent bottom to bare wood)
2. Dowel the holes
3. Make some matching chips of wood & glue them to the dents (TiteBond, SigBond or hide glue)
4. Sand till flat
5. Pre-drill & fit new tuner holes (not easy... here's some tips from Ceri , whose posts I seem to exploit often  )
6. Final sanding, filling, nitro lacquering and polishing etc.

Yet another way would be just 'faux painting' that PlasticWood to match the headstock wood - of course, this is not recommended for vintage instruments.

I've not used that StewMac brand filler - how does it handle filling bigger-than-wood-pore sized holes?

You are right! Nasty filler on a vintage instrument is not good... I need to get rid of that right away! I'll look into grafting a few bits in there and doweling the holes up.

Thanks!
