I recently bought a used Japanese jaguar and I'm trying to figure out what year it is. The serial number on the neck is B000086 which means it should be a 1985-86 model according to fender's dating log but above the serial number it says "crafted in Japan" which means its a 1997 or newer model since that's when Fender started using the CIJ stamp. Any ideas?

OK, let's first assume it is a genuine Japanese Fender. Like the Fender support pages say, "records on early Japanese-made Fender instruments are not complete and are therefore not completely definitive for dating purposes" - and for the Jags, Jazzmasters etc. there's even less info than for Strats and Teles.

But, there is some internet info on guitars like that; serial# and "crafted" don't seem to match. You might want to see what's in the neck pocket; there usually is a manufacturing date stamped somewhere. Trust that for a true manufacturing date - if everything else tells you it's not a fake.

And if in doubt, posting pics (many, sharp, detailed and big...) on the forum would probably wake some of the real MIJ/CIJ wizards to give better answers.

The same incomplete (and in some cases inaccurate) serial number information can be found copied all over the Internet.

That B CIJ is probably from 1998.

I'm not sure you will find dates inside it.

Thanks for the answers! I have the guitar in the shop right now so I'll ask the experts there to take a look at it!

Hi matthewterrado,
According to our tracking, the guitar tracks back to a CIJ Jaguar in 3 Tone Sunburst- Fender part number # 027-7700-500 sold to a guitar shop in MD 6/22/1999.

hope that helps!
all the best,
rob
