I have a new j mascis squier jazzmaster. There are 10's in there now, but does anyone know if I would need to do anything to the nut to put in .12's?
Let me know what adjustments would be needed if any.
Thanks.

You talk about truss rod nut ?

Only neck curve reading can tell . IMO yes

Set up , here in the midle of the screen ; truss rod

Caution be shur to use the right allen wrench for the nut ; the Allen wrench must fit tight in the nut , If not tight you may damage, the nut .
Don't trust the tool in the guitar case

On the top of the neck where the strings slide through...
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with making adjustments to the neck nut so the heavier gauge strings will slide through easier? Do I need to make adjustment on .12's?
thanks.

For the nut , you need nut files ( few size ) , better to know what to do before. Some nut can work with 012 strings , look how strings seat on the nut .

If not sure see a qualified luthier .

Nothing wrong with investing in a nut file set.

But if the only time it's needed is to widen (note: not deepen) the nut grooves for a heavier string set, it may IMHO be a bit overkill.

First, check how the .012 set works - the grooves may already be OK (=worn enough) for it, and you don't need to do anything. Use some lubricant (lip balm & toothpick works, but you can also buy specialiced products...).

But if the grooves need work:
Take a piece of 400 grit wet/dry sanding paper, fold it and gently sand the groove sides till the strings fit just right - that doesn't take many strokes.
You don't need to take all strings off for this, just tune down one string at at time, lift it from the groove and slip to the side.
Polish the finished groove (with 1200-2000 grit paper), check your setup and play on.

To widen the nut grooves for the wound strings, you can even use strings to do it. Drag a length of string over the nut groove. (Slowly if it's a plastic nut, so you don't melt it.) Repeat until the string sits comfortably. To speed it up, drag the string through abrasive paste first.
For the unwound strings, this won't work, but it's rarely a problem. If it is, a luthier with a nut file should be able to fix it in a couple of minutes.
